Default Tyre stretching why o why

See plenty of these about still I don't get it

I know we all like different things but there's no logic to it, the grip level must be hugely reduced, safety has to be a concern because the tyre will be trying to pull away from the bead so a little touch could cause tyre to literally pop off, and it looks utterly shit

What are the benefits of it ? Am I missing something because I don't get it at all

I think it's largely a VW thing, don't see it so much now though as a few years ago.
but yes, it does look shit and I can't see the point.

It has always been my pet hate!! Tyres that are to narrow for the wheel look crap and also the risk of damaging the side of the wheel when parking are hugely increased!!

would that get flagged up as unsafe on an mot test?
the rim sticking past the widest part of the wheel arch is illegal in itself isn't it?

The reason, although it looks crap and is dangerous, I think it’s to fit wider rims and still have clearance.

i think it’s then kicked off as a trend, so even rims that would fit had stretched tyres.
