Default Tyre sizes on a focus. Who’s in the know?

I’ve got a Mk1 focus diesel daily and I put a set of focus mp3 17s on it a few months back. The tyres are all needing replaced and will be in the next couple of days. Anyway it’s got 215/40/17 tyres on it but the way the roads are nowadays up here I want something with a bit more sidewall to absorb the potholes when I haven’t seen them and swerved like a maniac.

so my question is can I up the profile to say 45/50 and get away with it without having to touch arches and splash guards etc. Oh the car sits standard just now but I’ve coil overs waiting to go on when I get 5 mins to myself

St170's are on 215/45/17's I think. I know 215/50/17's catch on the front but clear on the back.

I had 17's on my old Mk1, also lowered on Eibach's 30mm, with no issues. Had 205/40 but they were like rubber bands and it was too hard. Went to 215/45 and it was much better, and it filled the arches a tad more.
