Default Saph cossie 4x4 clutch. UPDATED 09/02/19

I've just done a bit of work on my cossie over the last few months.

Anyway I've replaced the clutch with a standard one cause the car was still on its original clutch and that coped with the 300 and odd bhp.

Now I've fitted a standard clutch from Burton power
https://www.burtonpower.com/luk-std-...624163200.html

I've roadtested the car and when gets to 4k revs the clutch is slipping. I take it the clutch I've fitted is no good.

Is yours on the standard cable and adjuster? I wonder if it is adjusted up too much...don’t they have a ratchet system on the Sierra?

Yeh it's got the standard clutch pedal ratchet.

I've done loads of clutches on other vehicles over the years but bloody sods law I do my own car which is a bit of a chew to do and the cooooont slips lol. To me it's like the clutch pressure plate isn't strong enough????

I used the Reyland uprated clutch cover but it does make the pedal heavy if you do not do a hydraulic conversion at the same time.

Heres the reason why new standard clutches slip

many moons ago a standard RS Turbo clutch would take 170bhp car all day, I fit a standard LUK clutch to a fiesta turbo with a 165 chip as its only mod, it slipped instantly.

so, I did some research, a long time ago the RS Turbo would of shared cluctch components with another vehicle that may of had more power therefore the clutch could take it, but as demand for these wilted, the manufacturer stopped making them and then used something else or modified another clutch to make the RS Turbo ones.

I can only assume this is whats happened here, either way you're not alone, it happened to me a few year ago on a 4x4 saph too.

However, today is your lucky day as I have a variety of super duper friction marerial based clutches for sale as I am doing major garage tidy out,

AP6 Paddle spinner and cover just had full refurbishment and repaddled, it looks Gucci as.
Alcon 6 paddle with cover
Helix brand new cover

Worlds ya oyster, don't be a jew, and bite off more than you can chew,
buy from me, for super duper clutcheee

It def sounds like something is wrong with the actual cluch plate or pressure plate.
If it were mine I’d take it all back out and double check the clutch parts are all the correct ones etc and that you have no grease or anything on the pressure plate or flywheel faces.

I know now you said it’s a Burtons clutch but what actual make is it?

Cheers Paul

I did think it could have been contamination on the clutch or flywheel but if it was that it would be slipping as soon as there was any load on it, not starting to slip at 4000 revs. If I was Glenn I would be buying one of the uprated ones that AJC is offering, probably the Alcon would be my choice.

I wonder if it’s possible to spray brake cleaner down into the flywheel to wash out any possible contaminants? Either that or you turn the boost down and live with it lol

If you can get under the car safely it doesn’t take long to get the gearbox out. I have had mine out in under an hour before.

Bummer you have to take it all out again. Dose it slip from a low rpm in 5th or is it just as it starts boosting hard. Probably best to fit an up rated one if you have to remove the box again. At least it will be a little more abuse proof

At least Glenn has a nice warm and dry garage to do it in, not on the driveway in the freezing cold and rain!!!

I went through all this with my 2wd, only running greens & t34

The new std clutches just aren't upto it, I tried brand new motorcraft and luk covers with both std and an ap 6 paddle centre and it still didn't work. Always slipped in the higher gears on the motorway.

After taking the box out for the 4th time enough was enough and I put an ap heavy cover in it. Was fine after this.

Aren't the helix covers supposed to be the ones to go for these days?

Thats the same set up i'm running on my 4x4, i've had a box rebuild the start of this year & gone with a Helix & orgainc clutch setup in it. I think it's about 330bhp and so far so good... :fingers crossed!:

I started my saff up today just to let the engine run. I had a look underneath and I think my gearbox is leaking oil. I've still got an oil leak from the engine which is black oil and I've also got evidence of clear oil leaking too which has got to be gearbox oil with it being clear.

looks like the box is defo coming back out again. I've ordered a 46mm multi spline socket so if I had to I will strip the box down to change the oil seals.

Is it easy leaving the front prop attached and just align it when I put the box back in. Also can I leave the gear stick/selector on the car and just undo the 4 bolts on the cradle and tale the gear selector rod pin out.

Since the car isn't taxed I took it around my estate cause I was turning the car around in the garage. I drove the car in first gear to over 4k revs and the clutch defo warm slipping like it was when I first fitted it.

I will keep an eye on the oil leak and see if it gets any worse.
