18 cvh ford sierra

Hi all my 1.8 cvh in my sierra broke the timing the water pump gave up and i think it caused the belt to break??.
My question is with my belt broke will there be internal damage to my engine???
Can anyone help/advise THANKS

i snapped a belt in a 1.6 cvh and only bent 1 exhaust, valve,,
rest of engine will be ok,
