Default Sierra 24v non starter...(after no start for 4 years)

Hi everyone,
Thought it was about time I done something with my project that has been left sitting for approx 4 years. I have a 1989 sierra xr4x4 with a 24v cosworth installed.
The background. The engine was installed, and ran and drove, before being parked up for further work to be done on the car.
the problem now? It won't start. I checked the oil levels(and topped up) and other basics before attempting a start after 4 years standing, new battery, fresh fuel. After a extra boost from a second battery the starter turned it over, but no start. So. I have spark, I have fuel as the plugs are wet after cranking, the crankshaft sensor tested and confirmed as working, checked I have 12v on the edis6 at pin8, and I appear to have 12v ignition on pins 37 and 57 on the ecu. I removed the air filter and duct. Last time today when I was fiddling around, I gave it one last try and I had a loud pop and bang and a reasonably substantial amount of smoke through the air intake/filter...
Sooo.... my question. Has something internal just made a bigger problem or am I missing something?is it timing?i didnt think the chain could jump.i wanted to confirm the engine was good before starting the rest of the resto on the car. To add, while it's sat nothing has been done to the car, it has just sat, as is.
am grateful for any ideas/guidance.
thanks
Mark

Hi mate iv just ready your post I would say put a nice new set of spark plugs in it and 100% check the firing order and I think it will fire up as you said it has popped and banged
in the old day we would just stick a tow rope on it and drag it down the road and 9 times out of 10 it would do the job .

Have you drained all old fuel and refilled with fresh?
