Question Longer oil filter

Just a curious question, What gains apart from holding a little more oil is there to using the 'correct size' filter for the engine.

My previous filter from Ford was the larger filter EFL600, But this time round I got the correct size EFL134.

Not like I noticed anything different, I felt it a little strange to receive the larger filter.

Ford have some different filters with the same size seal and same thread size. I`v used efl 600 on Cosworths for many years, as they are slimmer and longer, make it easier to change, and they are cheap

I have just had an oil and filter change on my 2wd Saff and the latest Ford oil filter is now actually smaller than the ones I have had before. Been told it wont make any difference.

Well from a purely scientific point of view, the larger oil filter is good for more oil in the system which dilutes the amount of deposits into a larger quantity and soaks up more heat, apart from that, a larger filter has a larger filtration area and this is good with keeping the restriction from a clogging filter to a minimum.

In the real world with a cosworth that will hardly do the mileage between services, it’s probably a moot point, but there is always benefits of running a larger filter.

The vag 1.8t guys use a larger filter to successfully stop the sludging issue along with more frequent oil changes, so it’s well documented what larger oil filters can bring to the table

Three things are important with oil filters, what physical size fits, what’s the release valve pressure in the filter and what is the connection type, if all these are adhered too then there is no issue with trying a different filter.

Thanks lads, yes it looks like the valve pressure is the same. At least there's some pro's then. Plus i think the bigger ones are cheaper
