Default ERST / XR3i wheels - what are they made of

As this place has a vast number of members with a huge amount of knowledge (read '"saddos"), can anyone tell me what material S2 RST and mk4 XR3i wheels are made of. I know there's probably no metallurgists on here but someone might know for some reason.

I'd assume they're not steel and will be some sort of lighter alloy. Can anyone confirm exactly what they are and if i'd be able to weld some steel box section onto them.

The reason i ask is that i made a wee table for my patio out of an old steel wheel and some box section, had it powder coated and a fitted a piece of glass over the top. I have a spare ERST and XR3i wheel lying about somewhere in the garage and wondered if it would be possible to make another two to match.

Cheers

Why not use an old hub flange and weld the legs to that then bolt the wheel to the flange in the traditional way with wheelnuts
