It is still possible to find a real bargain! My next door neighbour has had quite a lot of problems and he is very short of money and could not afford much in the way of a car.
Someone he knows heard about a 2002 Mondeo 1.8 petrol that has been sitting under some trees in someones garden. The owner has bought a new Mondeo and just parked it there as he wasnt sure what he was going to do with it. Its only done 80,000 miles from new with FSO, silver mettalic paint which is very good and no signs of rust anywhere. It drives really well, brakes, clutch, steering etc all feel good and it still has 6 months MOT on it.
He told the owner about my neighbour and the bloke said if it can help him he can have it for £100!!! My neighbour thought it was a wind up but went with his friend to look at it and sure enough drove away in it for the £100!!
I had a good look at it yesterday and went for a drive in it and it has to be the best bargain ever!!!
There are still good people out there and I am over the moon for my neighbour.

I have met a few MOT testers who have been given good cars when people get too old.
My Mum has just had her licence cancelled as her eyesight is too poor and her 50,000 mile polo with full service history is going to a learner driver who is the daughter of someone who works for me.

me and my mate always used to go halfers on a local bargain buy for work to keep our proper cars good. we would usually pick up something with a few months mot left for about £200 , run it into the ground for work then just scrap it when the mot ran out and usually get half our money back . it was always fun on the drive down to the scrappies as wed be bouncing it of walls and posts on the way to dump it.
once we got stopped by the police as wed used it for target practice with our roughing nail guns and there was rows of nail holes through the metal along the sides that looked like bullet holes

fuzzy When I first went to Australia I lived in Adelaide and people used to buy a car from a scrapyard for real cheap money, fill the boot with cans of oil and water and use it to drive to Perth. When they got there (sometimes they didnt!) they put it back in a scrapyard and saved a lot of money on the air fare and had an adventure at the same time!
I used to get loads cheap, just buy them, drive for a bit and sell what I could off them before scrapping them.
Used to be able to get spares for cars I wanted to keep or find tools/coins and cash in them.

The Mondeo my neighbour has got is not an old heap on its last legs but a really good example and he is going to keep it for a long time. That is why I think he has got a genuine bargain for just £100!!
My record back in the day was a MKI Astra 1300 for £30. It was scruffy, but had ten months ticket and was utterly solid and reliable. It did a year with me then I gave it to my mates son as his first car, and he promptly wrote it off.

Cheers. IIRC all it needed was new leads, and I gave it an oil change to show it I cared, and that was it. It was quite liberating for a year to not care where I parked, or have to get stressed when it needed waxing but the weather was too crap to let me.
Just a note on this. My first car I bought was 2 Ford Anglia 105e cars. Built one from both. Eventually ended up with Lotus Cortina engine and back axle 3.7 diff 5.5 J lotus wheels etc.
Total for both cars £5.00
Was in 1966 though LOL

Well done on your purchase.

Even in 1966 that was still so cheap for 2 Anglia 105Es!!! I put a 1500 Cortina gt engine and gearbox in my 105e, 3.9diff and other mods and it cost a lot more than £5.00 in 1968.
Me and a friend bought a 1995 BMW 7 Series, been sat on a driveway. £100, drove it to an MOT and passed no issues, took it home for a wash and polish, sold it for £1400 week later.

In 2006 I bought a Granada Cosworth for £60 due to engine failure, the car started but smoked, once home I checked the dipstick and the oil was at the very top ie the handle! drained 7 litres to get it back to the max mark but it still smoked when reved, I removed the suction damper near the air filter and that was full of about a litre of oil, restarted it hay presto no smoke!
the owner had been pulling the auto trans dipstick out to check the oil level and topped up the engine oil!
ended up puting the engine in my my track car sierra and then raced it for a season before putting a YB in, the rest of the car broke for a few bob aswell, the engine then went in a 3dr rep a guy on here owned..

I must admit to doing some very strange things to cars during my driving years. I suppose one of the daftest money saving bodges was putting cooking foil behind the big end shells to take up wear when they started to rattle. You must remember that was when I was an aprentice and married and money was very very tight.
Just one of the dodges. Many a story to tell. Ford Anglia and Cortina engine changes in 3/4 hour. Off to a T. Buying burnt out mk1 escort and putting it back on the road.
