Default Cosworth ST170, is it true?????

Just a quick question. For a long time I've been out of the for ford scene, basically chugging along so to speak driving bmw's 5 series😂🤣 but my mate has been going on about a cosworth st170 he's seen. And honestly I've never heard of one. Am I missing something? Or is it true?

I've seen a mk1 focus forsale on eBay before with a 2.0l naturally aspirated cosworth tuned engine, can't remember much more about it as it was about 2 years ago.

There's a white MK1 Focus RS round our way with a 4x4 Cosworth engine and running gear in it. Turning out about 600+ bhp by all accounts

I think Cosworth had something to do with the engines.

cosworth did a bit of development work on the 170 mainly the exhaust which is over complicated for a focus tbh and some engine related work, I know the advert you mean on ebay and its a joke wrote by a juvenile and to actually stick a cosworth badge on the car makes him look a tit and his advert reads like a tit as well, as for the owners club its a fb page run by clicky chavs need I say more

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-FOCUS...sAAOSwlY1ZJ~Sb

considering its 5dr with a ironing board for a spoiler the best quotes from the advert are

"LED BLUE LIT INTERIOR INCLUDING FOOT WELLS LOOKS REALLY COOL AND BRIGHT"

"SHE'S COSWORTH TUNED FROM THE FACTORY"

"THE SEXIEST SHAPE IN MY VIEW"

There was a Ford Focus car built by cosworth in America. It was called the Ford Focus cosworth concept , they only ever built one as a demo and tbh it looked very nice , it had a very lightly tuned 2.0 litre zetec turbo engine (looks like a blacktop) with only 200 bhp.
Personally I thought it was fitted with the 2.3 litre ranger duratec engine when cosworth started doing all there bolt on tuning kits for kit cars etc which you can buy from burton power etc.
The only version of the Focus we got was the t190 , t230 and the t250-r which was a rally car with cage etc from factory.
These were built by gmd I think which was a division of montune and commissioned by Ford as a limited run.

Hope that helps

Cheers paul

Coscast is just a patented casting process, you could coscast a turd shaped piece of metal

Cosworth would never do a 5door st170 anyway, far too heavy and handle like shit.

I think it looks really well with the flared arches etc , especially for a yank mobile.

Cosworth Mahle had input in the engine development. My mate worked on it.

there is a rumour that cosworth helped on the engine devolment of the st170. firstly if they did they should be ashamed of themselves as they cocked up big time. im a big st170 fan but even i know the engine is an overcomplcated mess that cant make its claimed power. anyway there was a long discussion on facbook a while back and the answer was inconclusive to me whether they were involved or not. a guy works for cosworth and spoke up saying he has asked the long time cosworth guys about it and they knew nothing about it. others claimed they definately did and produced an article on it. so im still none the wiser.

When you compare it to the Honda Civic type r its light years behind. They are shit but like any engine you chuck a few grand and you will see 280/300 bhp in na form. I've got the 67mm throttle body , billet clip , msd coilpack and leads ,denso plugs , American thermostat like the early zetec slivertop , regularly serviced new oil etc , just covered 60000 miles and it's slow as fuck , my rs1800 fiesta was quicker with k and n kit and a stainless exhaust around 135 bhp.
It handles very well thou . I just can't see why it's so poor , it's easily got the best flowing zetec head by a country mile it must down to the cam choice and induction side surely

Cheers paul

I'm not sure what input they had but there was some. It's always puzzled me why they are so low on power and thirsty. I hear they are great with the supercharger bolted on

I doesn't really matter if cosworth had input or not you can't call a Ford Focus st170 cosworth tuned unless it's been either fully developed engine wise by cosworth or they have drastically changed it from a standard ford based engine and they've gone to town on it and then iam sure cosworth would of ask for some markings or stamps on casting or components to let people know they had a hand in tuning the car. A bit like mountune or wolf or even the cosworth badge itself and even that rs badge which are all approved ford tuning companies or branches owned by ford.
I wanted to throttle body mine after going in my mates 250 bhp type r as he chucked about 4 k on secondhand parts to get 30 odd bhp from his engine . The bolt on kit from jenvey etc isn't that good I've heard it only takes the car to around 190 / 200 bhp . I was going to go tapered independent throttle bodies , big valve head , and forged Pistons but couldn't be arsed as it was around 4 k and then you had management on top of that so decide not to do it. I would love a 280 /300 bhp on bodies thou they sound quality

Cheers Paul

I have just got one and tbh its feels a lot quicker than the wifes 2.0 zetec esp. Might get it on the rollers and see at some point.
They are good fun to drive tho.

On this I agree and tbh the whole thread came about due to a pleb on ebay, dont think any 170 owner with a once of savvy would badge it up into something its not, good well maintained examples can give you a decent drive and put a smile on your face, but if your simply chasing power then its the wrong car

It's a great handling car that's for sure no question but it just lacks that little bit extra to make it a really good car , to start off with is the cheap materials ford used for vital components , the ride is very harsh and that fact that if the engine was a genuine 170 bhp from the factory that would be a good starting point lol . A genuine 200 bhp would of made it a great road car , to me ford always miss the point like with the new focus rs , I know let's make a 4x4 wheeled drive car as that's what people have been asking for since the escort cosworth , then they go and fuck it up by making it 4 doors wtf. It maybe a great piece of engineering but people who are willing to spend 35k on a hatch back want a hot hatch 3 door sporty looks not a family car.

spot on paul I dropped a additional 2k into my engine to just creep over the 200hp, was it money well spent ? hell no and would I do it again ? hell no, but until you try these things you can only speculate although saying that I have had mine a few years and enjoy it, but my days of big turbo cars are long gone and simply enjoy fords

Given that they have sold like hot cakes that's just your opinion and simply not true for the majority.

Also if they had made a 3dr then they wouldn't have been able to deliver it at the same price, and no fucker is paying Ł40k for a focus!

Yes, three-door C-segment hatches are now so desirable and selling so well that virtually all manufacturers have given-up on making them because it isn't worth the expense anymore.

Who actually makes a three-door one now, apart from VAG? Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, Honda have all stopped bothering. I was quite happy with my 5dr Golf R. It looked plenty sporty in my eyes. It's funny how so many people are ok with the Saph Cosworth too, isn't it? The thing with modern RS/ST models is that people always find something to moan about.

Shame Cosworth didn't have a hand really. Although underpowered you can still get some decent pace down the old country roads with some well timed gear changes.

Have to say I prefer the look of the 5 door, think its aged better than the 3... maybe this means i'm officially getting old Mine handles great even with the extra bulk.

30-50 bhp gain from throttle bodies isn't that bad really, especially if it improves the 0-60.

I recall seeing a white LHD Focus SVT with the Duratec23 for sale on eBay a while back. It had a Cosworth inlet manifold along with a few other Cosworth engine parts associated with the Duratec23 engine. The advert stated it had been used as a development car for the tuning parts available for the Duratec23 engine.

most tuners etc all had a play with most of the ford range at some point chris and over in the states ford went that extra mile but here in the UK on a mass sales level as you prob know the 170 never had any such backing, over there you have specialist outlets for the focus svt like CFM & FSWERKS all we have is pumaspeed who buy from them anyway and add on there extra bit for profit

It was never designed to compete with the Type R, that would be the RS. The 170 is a "warm" hatch.

You say that but it's a 2 litre na engine and so is the type r , to compare a 2.0 na engine to a 2.0 turbo engine is abit unfair to the type r imo , even thou the civic was more than capable of hold its own against the rs.
Yes that is my opinion , but I know many others who where so excited about buying the new rs and didn't because how many doors it's got. A true sports car has 3 doors again imo
I can't believe people are paying 34k for a Focus , why do you think the focus rs mk2 has held its price so well , Because it's will be the last 3 door rs model made now we've gone down the shit 5 door route.

Cheers paul
