Hi guys

Got a major problem with my car

I got a 1993 fiesta Cayman . It was given to me as a project , I've got it back on the road but this thing guzzzles petrol. £20 of fuel does about 40 miles Surely this can't be right ?

So far I've done a service , with plugs and filters and changed thermostat but no change

It's running very rich . In the morning when starting its chucks out a black substance on the floor And judders before moving off ...

Can anyone out there please help ? Apart from this problem it's a great car with only 50k on the clock

 

What engine is it?

Could be a faulty coolant temp sensor for the ecu if it's fuel injection.

It's the 1.3 petrol .. I believe it is the fuel injection..?

Where is the temperature coolant temp sensor located please?

I think it could be that as temperature gauge never goes past quarter mark even if we've been out in the car all day

Possibly stuck thermostat,if it thinks it's cold the auto choke will stay on giving the engine more fuel.
Aside from that how much is a litre of fuel where you stay,could just be very expensive ha ha!

Well I changed the thermostat about 2 weeks ago but still the same symptoms

 

Common problem on early CFI units. Put a 1.1k ohm resistor between the two wires for the ECU coolant temp sensor under the inlet manifold. A new sensor will not work. There was a technical bulletin on this when I was at Ford in the early 2000s.

What is happening is the car thinks it is too cold all the time so never gets off choke completely. This removes the full choke sonbrings it back into tolerance.

Stupid question but I assume that I need to expose the 2 wires for coolent temp sensor and then hook ohm resistor between them?

Ok so I got the ohm resistor from maplin .

Now what's the best way on doing this ? Shall I use a soldering iron to attach it or is there an easier method

 

To start with, I would strip back a bit of wire sheath on each wire (not next to each other, staggered so they cannot touch each other) and wrap the resistor ends round each wire and test it first.

Insulate each connection with a bit of tape.

If it works, remove tape, solder each connection properly and reinsulate.
