Default Is it okay to clean sooty sglow plugs and if so what should I clean them with ?

Hi all

car - 2006 ford focus sport 1.8 TDCI

I put another set of brand new glow plugs in last month but still having the problem of smoke and misfire for 30seconds - 1 minute from overnight park, pulled glow plugs out earlier and the tips of all 4 glow plugs were sooty, not awfully bad but still each had carbon at the tips.
I know I need to find out the cause for that but I am hoping whilst they are out of the engine if I was to clean them before putting them back in that my car will start okay tomorrow morning, if it does I know the problem is the car not starting up properly due to the plugs tips having carbon on them, then I shall investigate why.
the carbon/soot is dry not wet.

so my question, is it possible to clean the carbon/soot off the tips off the glow plugs and what should I use if so, would brake cleaner be ideal ?

thanks so much to all in advance

Thought you'd been moved to the Focus section
To reduce carbon build up if you haven't already done so, delete the egr valve by blanking it off

Hi

The Focus section looks like a different forum, would I be able to login using my username/password on this site on there ?

The EGR valve was replaced about 15 months ago (big job cost Ł400) as it is integral with the manifold, turbo has to come off e.t.c., not going to blank off the EGR, otherwise I'd have just done that last time.

In my 21 years as a mechanic I've never had to clean a set of glow plugs, normally just replace them if their faulty. Can't go wrong with a light wire brush I imagine??

Hi there friend, just had an idea. If me asking for help and asking questions here is an inconvenience to you then why not give me your mobile or landline contact number and home address and postcode , then instead of coming here for help I go to you and your house instead , ''problem'' solved?

Edit: That link doesn't bring me to a different forum it just brings me back to where I originally posted?

hi.

I have not tried anything with it yet, I did go for a free suspension test at kwik fit and they confirmed my suspicions that the problem was the drop links. I have ordered the parts and they should come tomorrow or Tuesday. They only cost Ł13 for the pair and despite having never replaced drop links before I'm sure it should be a doddle, looking to have thme replaced in under an hour fingers crossed

The link works for me sorry
I was helping direct traffic
Nobody wants the general section full of threads on your scrap bodged up death trap of a focus
So why don't you try posting in there... all your other threads have been moved to there, get the hint

Or start a new thread in the projects thread keeping it all in one thread and add some pictures

Or better still carry on and hopefully you'll be banned

hello there friend, as always such a pleasure to hear from you.

The link does not work for me, it just re-directs me to where I posted in the first place
My car is not a death-trap, if it was I'd be dead and buried by now.

I post here politely and I am always appreciative of any help but I find on any thread I make your always there having a go trying to put me down, I feel you have a problem.

as I said if it is better for you that I not post here anymore then give me a contact number for yourself and your home address , that way I will come to you for advice and knock on your door at home and you can become one of my best friends and mechanics and that way you can come to this forum without getting upset that I have asked a question, so go on, your address and contact number..........................

hi there

Not getting what ? you should be pleased, you have basically been begging for a reaction from me since I joined, every thread I post I offer thanks in advance and am very appreciative for any I get. However you never post anything of use you type things to try and get a reaction (you are in fact the troll not me at all) but up until today I have not let you get to me but now you are trying to crucify me ( feel like your getting people on here to hate and make a joke out of me) and so I am not prepared to let you carry on like this, if you have a problem, PM me and let' sort it out and get along. if you see a thread and are not happy about it then may I suggest you leave the room instead of hating.
You're the kind of person who would be the school bully at school but I'm not in school anymore and am not prepared to tolerate any of this crap. (yes, I said crap)

Oh, and I was only joking, I don't really want to come to your house , I can barely tolerate you over the internet but in reality if we met who knows what would happen if you and me met. I only suggested (jokingly) you give me your address and contact number to see what excuse you'd come up with next as I said if you gave me your details I'd stay of this forum and come to your house for you to give me advice on car topics and help with car repairs. I do not want to meet you unfortunately, you have a bad attitude.

I don't usually speak out like this but why should I let you ( a troll) continue in your abusive nature ? in fact maybe you are the one who should be banned and if you carry on your tirade of abuse you shall be reported to the moderators in the hope of being banned yourself.

thanks again

cleaning them is like putting an ashtray on a motorbike. to test them take all the wireing of them or this test want work. leave them in situ put the earth from your test light on the live side of the battery and touch the tip of the glow plug with the probe. if the test light doesnt light or if its dim its f....d. the test light should be bright

So what time on tuesday are you gnna post the new thread?
You know the 1 where the nuts on the droplinks are just spinning,
So about 100 people will tell you how to do it,
But you'll still spend a week posting about new ways youve tried turning the nuts, but still wont come off?

You've managed to post at a guess 15 separate threads regarding your Focus within 2 weeks
It sounds like it's had it... cruel to be kind ( sorry if it hurts )

That's the link to the Focus section again

https://passionford.com/forum/ford-focus-87/

When it does run right ( if ever ) how many miles a week do you do in it?

Back on topic, best way to clean them is with the sperm of mature, brown throated, three toed sloth from the rainforests of brazil, this must be done once a month for optimum performance on cold starts.
Or just leave it as this is normal

Dont take them out tho, just run the torch over the engine bay and this should be enough to clean them up internally

What i would do pal is take them out put the glow plugs in a vice. Put an earth lead from the threaded part of the glow plug to the earth on the car battery then put a live wire from the battery to the end of the glow plug where the wiring from the car goes.

Then put your fingers on the other end of the glow plug.
