Default ST170 vs SVT

I've been looking at the US equivalent of the ST170 and noticed they are quicker in a straight line which got me thinking why is that? From what I know/read the powertrain, drivetrain, suspension setup - all the same. Some interior/exterior differences but nothing out of the ordinary. Any thoughts? Weight is also similar depending on the spec.

Am!? VVT in the ST170 is also on the inlet, piston maybe, water pump maybe. Block I can't imagine it being majorly different, as the SVT is made in Europe (Germany) and shipped overseas to the US. And even if all that is different how is the performance that much different?

dont trust all you read as I know a lad with a imported svt and their engines are lower powered than the uk versions and I speak regular to good friends in the states who say the same hence their being so many turbo/supercharger options over there to make them better

I can't speak for power but there is a website called dragtimes.com where one'll find a focus svt with a remap and KN filter doing flat low to flat 15sec..

they're pretty much the exact same car. They're certainly the same gearbox and engine!

their fuel probably has a part to play. I just got the impression from the above two guys that they thought they were completely different.

I havn't had an svt in my hands. But I can't get in my garage with out tripping over St170 bits.

The pictures I've posted are from a guy in the us that's rebuilding an svt for acproject and came about due to me noticing some differences whilst rebuilding an st170 turbo for the same sort of project.

Is his engine not from an svt ? Well there are many similarities to an st170 but there are loads of differences including webbing on the block that could not be from the same cast as an st. Pistons, engine mounts and tensioner , water pump housing and the vvt on the exhaust cam.

The pictures don't work......

The SVT and ST170 are the exact same zetec 2.0 engine. Are you sure your friend hasn't got a ZX3?

The photos must be a member logged on thing as I can see them.

Zx3, maybe ? The amount of people that say there st or Rs has a Duratec engine because it's on the cam cover.

So what's a zx3 ?

It's not an st, it's not a Zetec. It's obviously ford bassed and not Mazda.

I would be interested to find out.

As I understand it, a ZX3 is a Zetec -- the Z in there is Zetec & the X3 just states how many doors it has. That's how I've had it explained to me before anyway.

As far as I'm aware, the zx3,4,5 are all 'proper' duratec engines
the zx2 is a regular zetec

the svt is their version of an st170

I will try and get some photos but it's not a Duratec. It's not a Zetec and it's not an st but it has bits of all of them.

Well it must be either one of them. There were no other engines fitted into a focus...... unless it's diesel
