hello all,
this is my first post here so please move if im in the wrong area mods.

just got hold of a very cheap 2002 transit crewcab but i cannot for the life of me get it to start, previous owner told me he had ran it dry of fuel so i am suspecting it needs bleeding,

i have removed and filled the fuel filter with fresh diesel already to no success.

van will crank no problem at all but not fire,

i am fairly mechanically competant but i have never bled a fuel system on one of these vans.

its a 2.0 tddi duratorq engine i think and their is no primer on top of the fuel filter.

any suggestions or help appreciated

 

Try starting it with a tow as they can be hard to start. Have you tried opening injectors to get the air out?

It could be a fuel pump problem which is common om these vans

 

i dont have a vehicle able to tow the van really, is their any general ideas on do's and don't for the injectors as i am aware that they should not all be loosened at once

 

Just open one at a time.you will see if their is air in the system.crank the engine over whilst open

 

ok ill give it a go tomorrow as otherwise van seems to be willing to turn over

 

Just make sure you have plenty of charge in your battery steve

 

got high quality jump leads and a diesel car so batterys not an issue

 

As said as you crank it over bleed each one separately and you'll see air bubbles coming out. As said id keep the leads on while cracking to keep enough charge in the battery

 

will be trying it out a bit later assuming this weather clears up a bit. any idea what socket/spanner i need for the injectors so i dont end up going with the wrong tools (its parked at my mates currently)

 

from memory 17mm or 19mm spanner for injector pipe
as long as its the tddi engine crack open each injector one by one whilst cranking, fuel will bubble and then dribbnle out once the air is out the line, tighten and do the next one.
if all else fails, make sure you have a decent amount of fuel in the tank, and the fuel filter is full and give it a few brief sniffs of carb cleaner down the inlet pipe

 

tried loosening one injector pipe completely and no fuel comes outeven after a good minute cranking, not certain if thats normal or ?

 

Is the fuel pump working common on these to fail

 

fuel pump is an unknown as yet, whats the best way to check it, as im suspecting it also
