What mark is my escort?
Could anybody please let me know what mark my Escort is?
It's an L reg 1993 model and my insurance quotes it as a mk4, but I thought Ford Escorts from 1993 were MK5...

MK 5 1991 yours is a face lift model though ie; smiley front grill and would have the rounded spoiler as to the MK5's flat one... i would class it as a MK 5a..

it isnt a mk5a, its a mk5 facelift or mk5b.
How can 'a' be a follow on?

it is
like certain house numbers or flats, there's a 1 and a 1a
also, look in fast ford when they got RS2000's on the rollers, they term them as mk5 and mk5a
personally, I call it 5b/facelift to avaoid confusion, but really it should be 5 and 5a

Nope Mk5a
Previous versions have no suffix
But then again I always argue that the mk6 and 7 are only Mk5b and Mk5c

the mk6 is different enought to warrant it's own mark number IMO.
there's a big difference in driving them and there's more cosmetic diferences between a mk5 and 6 than there is between a 3 and 4

Just checked my log book, but it doesn't shed much light...
Make: Ford
Model/type: Escort
Body type: 5 Door Hatchback
Vin & engine numbers are correct.
When my insurance put in the reg it came up Escort mk 4

Just phoned them before and my Insurance company say that they have no records of mk5 1300cc Escorts from 1993 so have classed it mk4
Could my car be a bit of a rarity?

it doesnt really matter wot we all class it as does it? at the end of the day its not a mk 4 so you need to change that insurance wise... Try phoning another company as your im pretty sure if anything happens ( god forbid ) they will come out with something along the lines of "this isnt a MK 4 sir im sorry your insurance is void"
