Default Sierra sapphire cosworth fuel sender weird problem

Hi all.
I refitted the fuel tank on my sapphire after an underside resto and found the fuel gauge would not work and the fuel light on the warning panel stayed on even after putting 20 ltrs of fuel in.

So last night I dropped the tank down a bit and removed the sender and checked the multi plug, earth post etc and all were in good condition.

I have a spare fuel tank so i removed the sender and moved the float by hand, the gauge went read the same as whatever position I put the float in.

So I fitted the old sender into the tank and turned the ignition on and the needle dropped right off the bottom of the gauge.

So I removed the sender and tried it out the tank and the gauge worked fine,so as a test I plugged in the original sender I removed and that worked fine too outwith the tank,so I reinstalled that sender to find it MADD the needle drop right if the gauge again.

So,the senders I gave both work fine out of the tank and as soon as I fit them in the tank they stop working.
all terminals are clean,no broken/nipped wires, both senders read accurately out if the tank.

Anybody seen this before?

Also,my fuel tank has been painted,if that makes any difference?

Thanks,lee

Not sure but I have an old tank that's definitely been used and I marked the orientation before I removed it,I checked it against my sender before I removed it and it was installed the correct way.

I had this fault, did the same as you and got angry lol. Turned out the earth wire had a break that only occurred when the tank was in place. Ran a new earth wire and everything has been fine since.

I had this problem too and it was the 4 wire cable that goes through a boot floor grommet. The connector had come loose and was intermittently dropping the gauge to completely empty. Go over a bump and it flies back up again to wherever the level of petrol in it is.

If that is indeed the problem, try soldering the 4 wires and get rid of the connector. Seems to have fixed mine.

The connector behind the jack is perfect, maybe try it again and twist the wires at the same time, see what it does.
Thanks for the replys

I fitted my sender incorrectly and it caused the gauge not to work. I took it out and turned the sender around in its hole and its beem fine since.
