Towing puts a bit of extra strain on the engine/chassis but shouldnt just lose you power.
Checked all the basics? Plugs/HT leads etc etc.
Shock of pulling a vehicle hasnt caused any wiring/connectors to come away from their sensors etc?

In what way does it feel likes its "lost power"? 2.0 conversion is a huuuuuge improvement over the 1.6

I think an LS1 engine is the only real solution to your issues

I have lost power on acceleration put my foot down takes a lot longer to respond than it used to
My friend suggested putting a 1.6 cvh block in it with the zetec head?

The other way round works, zetec block, CVH head, to give you a ZVH hybrid.

How hard is it to do or is it easier to put a 1.8 in it

Just search ZVH engine on here in the search bar above and there will be plenty of stuff to help you out.
