Hi there, I am having a few issues with my rst, the engine has done 3000 miles since it was rebuilt, crank re ground etc. My issue is the engine from cold has 70-80 psi of oil pressure and from cold sounds lovely, but once warm the oil pressure drops to 10-12 psi @ around 95 degrees coolant temp. The engine does not tap but the top end sounds a bit cammy and its annoying me! When I rebuilt the engine I used a pattern part oil pump, now I want to try something better, but I don't know where to go for a decent pump. I've tried loads of different oils to see if that changes things from 5w40 to 10w60 and the pressure when cold increases with the thicker oils but the warm oil pressure is the same.

any ideas?

 

The pressures you have posted up seem OK to me , mines std genuine pump and using 10/60 oil when warm is around 15-20psi so not a millions miles out from you

 

its a weird one, the noise does my head in though it sounds more like a 1300 ohv! are you running solid lifters?

 

No I'm using std hydraulic lifters . Does tap a bit from cold on one lifter until it's warm though then it's pretty quiet

 

I've tried 3 sets of pattern lifters lol! I've got some solids to try in it but I don't know if it will cure it. I rang ford but they wanted Ł100 nearly per hydraulic lifter!

 

You don't fit solid lifters on a hydraulic cam. That will munch the cam. You also shouldn't fit any other lifters once a cam and lifters have bedded in together. So swapping them about as you have will have only damaged the cam.
CVH's are never quiet by modern standards, always a tap here n there from the top end

 

The thing is I'm a bit stuck between a rock and a hard place, I don't want to spend Ł400 on another cam kit for the engine to still sound like a ka! lol

 

I have an update for my noisy engine issues! I have bit the bullet and removed the cam to fine the exhaust lobe on cylinder 4 to be worn out and half the size of all the others! not good for a cam that's only done 3000 miles! New cam kits ordered, and now the cars in a thousand pieces for some additional body/chassis work

 

Watch out for bits of it in sump etc clean it all out ! Also make sure new one is run in properly

 

Also check oil rating that can quieten them down

So after a dyno run everything measures up spot on

 

Sadly this is a common story with CVH cam's these days, what kit have you bought now? Newman are the best available IME.

As mentioned above flush out your engine to get rid of any swarf left from that lobe, new oil and filter of course too.
10-12psi is a bit low for a new engine but only a little, as you've had a lobe break up it would be worth inspecting your bottom end shells too.

 

I have gone for a Kent 34 complete kit with springs lifters etc, I had the sump off over the Christmas break and checked everything the shells all look good but the oil pump pick up had sucked up a lot of crud/bits of cam. I've ran the cam in as per Kent's instructions which was fun running a rst at over 2500 rpm stationary for 20 minutes! got a little hot but not too bad. The engine sounds a lot happier now, albeit still a little bit chattery from the lifters but 99% better than it was, its also comes on boost a lot quicker which is good! the oil pressure is also much better, 15-20psi hot idle but a massive difference under load, 3000 rpm is 45-50psi as opposed to about 30psi before! just the brakes to do now as they are terrible!

 

get it set up to mate if you have changed the cam and had issues in the past

 

when cold mine reads about 6psi and when warm holds at 1psi oil pressure.
