Default 95 Escort 1.3 pushrod engine

Evening all

Got a Escort Encore 1.3 3door as a new daily hack while I'm doing a few bits to my Focus ST.

Coming from a 300bhp ST to a 1.3 20 year old escort it's incredibly slow I fully understand it's only about 50bhp so I wasn't expecting it to be in anyway shape or form fast.

Just wondering if there is anything I can do to make it more revvy/responsive? After about 40mph it will get to 70mph easily and quite happily sit there all day it's just getting to 40mph literally takes forever!! It's fuel injected it looks like it was a last minute thought though as it's the oddest injection system I've ever seen haha.

Any help will be much appreciated I'm not expecting miracles but just something to help make it easier to drive.

Cheers Andy

Perhaps a good service will help it out?

Defo agree about setting the tappets. Easy to do to.

Take a bit of weight out of it? Willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort for a bit more acceleration? As above, a good service, get the tappets adjusted and maybe air filter and exhaust mods. Cant see there being much out there for this engine mind.

Thanks for your replies guys

It's had a service I was thinking maybe a bolt on KnN filter to free up breathing they are cheap enough to.

In regards to the tappets is there a guide anywhere to show me how to adjust them? Or could you put up a rough guide?

Buy a Haynes should have all you'll need, pretty easy to do iirc, rocker cover off and feeler gauge spanner and screwdriver.

Lightened flywheel will help it rev much more freely.

Ye the zetec option is a good shout, still plenty of them about in scrap yards, makes for an ideal conversion.
