Default Engine build, standard head/cam or piper and ported

Hi after blowing the engine on in the RS It's time to build another. It seems this RS (F262SVW) seem to love killing a engine after seeing the write ups from its former keeper on here lol. Anyways latest spec, acralite Low comp Pistons, arp con rods, ford crank, febi oil pump, new water pump, Payne gaskets, gates timing belt and now it's time for the top end. I purchased a recon standard RST head and cam. I have a low mileage piper t2 cam and vernia I was thinking of fitting to the recon standard head but is it worth trying to find a stage 3 big valve head or will the recon with cam be good enough. I don't know how much the standard heads restrict?? Cheers Ryan

I think you should be asking why the engines are 'blowing up' before building another? What actually happened mate?
But one point to note is that if you fit that piper cam the lifters must come with it and ideally be matched to the lobes they previously ran with.

Standard head will not become too restrictive until around 250bhp.

Hi mate, the previous owner just had a lot of bad look, he hydrolocked a zvh etc I bought it off here about 2 years ago and he had just put a old used and abused engine in as he lost interest. a month ago the oil presure suddenly went and the smoke piled out, so guesing a ring. Was only runing 8psi.

So there would be no point buying a ported head since I'm only on mfi? Also the cam and tappets are matching but 1 tappet was noisy so was going to fit a new set. Is this a no go?? Do you think just stick to standard top end Karl? Cheers pal

Ah ok mate, I would save your money as you are still MFI and go with a standard head, even a standard cam would be fine too, but if you do change cams you cannot just fit new lifters as they work harden with the cam from new and fitting old with new will result in the lifters being damaged by the cam as they are soft and the cam will be hard.

Ahhh ok Karl, I won't bother with the piper cam then and just stick with the standard recon head and ford cam and see how I go. Was hoping to see the 180 mark when I get it set up.

I'm really tempted to go efi conversion before I put a head on but I'm Prity clued up on mfi and efi is over my head completely. also don't fancy pulling full loom out and trying to fit a fiesta one sounds like a can of worms reading some of the other threads. Just reading up on this gen8 stuff at the min that comes with full loom. Thanks again

A new EFI setup like the GEN8 will be much more reliable than any old MFI or Ford EFI setup, but it's the most expensive option of course.
For 180bhp if your MFI is working ok it will be fine anyway, if you want more power in the future then perhaps consider the GEN8.
