Is the rs500 one different then? What did they do?

Yes 500 beam is different , has an extra set of pick up points for trailing arms intended to be used in racing cars

( or so I've been informed anyway )

Yep, 2 brackets tack welded onto a standard 2wd beam for cosmetic purposes only, with all the 500s now going back to standard this will be handy for someone doing a resto if there beams been modified.
