Default Another ST170 IMRC thread!... but with pictures!!

Hi Guys/Girls,

I picked up a ST170 5 door in Magnum Grey cheap because the Engine Management light was on and I thought it would be a quick and easy fix. How ever I'm having some trouble narrowing down what is wrong with the IMRC. I have plugged in my eBay code reader and it has thrown up the P1518 error.

I have attached some pictures below of the board and a video showing that the cable doesn't move on starting the car or revving the car to 5000 revs.

So the fault is that the cable doesn't move but what causes that?

When I start the car there is a low pitch thud that comes from the IMRC for about 5 seconds then stops. I have had it open and started the car and it appears to be the motor jumping up and down.

I have used some chemical metal to hold the spring in place inside the unit so I know that's not the fault anymore and the cogs move when you start the car so that rules the motor out?

If anyone has any idea how to fix this it would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Sam

Sorry for the poor picture!

And here's the video link for the cable position.

Is the cable snapped and when you say the motor moves, do all the gears move too.

Hi Matt,

All the gears move when I start the car. It does make sense that the cable could of snapped. That might be why the motor is jumping if the gears keep rotating rather than pulling the flap open.

Is there anyway to repair it?

thanks

Sam

The motor relies on the cover being attached to keep it all together. See if you can pull the cable with out the gears moving

I've fixed mine a few times now, pain that it is.. I'm actually wondering if an uprated motor would do anything, as it looks very much like a 540 electric motor used in r/c cars.

Hi,

Is there any update on this issue? Im in Southend with same problem and would like to nail it. I can see in your pic their are two blown connections which is not good. Is your IMRC unit ont he bulkhead or down by the wheel arch?

Hi Chris,

I have sent it off for refurbishment. Join the official st170 owners club on Facebook. There a really helpful bunch!

My imrc is at the back of the engine. I think only the American version was in the wheel arch.

Do people relocate these causey mate had a ST24 mondeo and we located his cause it gets all the heat off the engine and he reckons the car felt more responsive.

They do look the same dont they, some tamiya 540 rc car motors are made by Johnson as well like the one in the picture.
