Definitely sounds like an earthing issue! Try independently earthing wires that you know are earths and see what happens.

The rear lights are definitely getting power to them from somewhere when the ignition is turned on,electrics aren't my strong point.i was wondering if I've knicked a wire while putting the car back together.

It almost certainly is an earring issue, as said.

Check the earths are good, i.e. they should be clean metal, not painted, which they may now be.

The reverse lights sounds an independent issue, I think they are switched ground, if so, then as you say a wire has probably been shorted.
