A4 have loads of problem with heads cracking and stuff
I have just got rid of my a4 after having it for two months. Turns out the block had small hair line crack and that's where my oil leak was coming from.

The Saab with the 2.3T aero hot spec is amazing value goes well and can be tuned a fair bit.
The Volvo is going to be older or higher miles, is much smaller and the V50 does not feel like it's built like a tank feels lower quality than and 9-5.
Both feel quite numb to drive and roll about on the corners if pushed. We had an 07 V50 D5 last week and I was quite impressed with it but I would take a 2.3t aero over a T5 v70.

the 2.0 d is only 136 bhp. the d5 is 180. I wouldn't be looking at the 2.0d. I don't know if the d5 will feel as quick as the t5? 180 in the d5 compared to 220 in the t5 but the diesel will be more torquey?

Glenn,

Not everything in life has to come down to owning a shitty ford

Nowhere in the OP's opening post does it say which model of Ford to buy!

Would be the Volvo for me.

I had a V70 D5 and it wasn't too bad, and that was only the old 160bhp version. Shed a few kg's and add some more oomph and it would probably be quite good. Can always add a few modifications if you feel like it too. I'm sure with a remap you can be in the order of 220bhp quite easily.

The Saab is just an old Vauxhall underneath. The Volvo is a Focus, which is a better start at least, and the D5/T5 are both Volvo's own engines.

I wouldn't bother with a V50 T5.

My Father had a V50 R-Design T5 for 4 years and it wasn't a great car. Huge steering wheel, poor driving position, seats offered no support, engine was quiet and muted (huge shame) and I'm not sure what Volvo done to the Ford chassis but it was numb to drive and didn't aspire any confidence at all and yet the suspension was rock hard.

The V70 is a total different kettle of fish though, based on the MK4 Mondeo. Much nicer to drive! Although admittedly I've only every driven a 2.4D and a D3.
