That's quite an open question, and it very much depends on how much power you want, and how much you want to spend.

The easiest conversion is to fit the 2.0 Zetec from a Mondeo, which will give you around 130bhp. You can keep the original gearbox and wiring loom etc with this one, so it's the simplest and most cost effective way to get a decent increase.

You could fit the engine from the RS2000, but that really requires the gearbox, subframe, wiring loom, hubs etc, so is much more involved.

Plenty of other options that would require a little more work. The ST170 engine is basically just a Zetec, so that would fit. The ultimate is probably the MK1 Focus RS engine, which is also a modified Zetec, so physically fits quite easily, but would require an aftermarket ECU, but would give loads of tuning potential.

You could fit an RS Turbo engine too, but that's perhaps a bit of a backwards step these days.

what is the budget?
best is a variable that means different things to different people, i'd go zetec turbo, 200bhp is easy, use an st170 bottom end and you can go to 300bhp i believe without mega money.
have a look through a few threads and you'll see the options, the escort allows for many options.

As has been said the 2.0 Zetec is the easiest, and cheapest swap, but it's not really going to feel that fast. But it would be easier, and not much more expensive to just buy a 2.0 Focus! So ultimately your best bet is to start with a faster car to begin with!

Or just get and LS series V8, not sensible but life's too short for that sort of thing. Joking aside, st170bottom end based zetec turbo, easy 250bhp, could ben done for a couple of grand.

The Focus RS engine is a good way to achieve a turbocharged Zetec using a lot of factory bits. The engines aren't particularly cheap though, and you'd have to buy an aftermarket ECU to run it.

If you go for the ST170 approach mentioned above it might work out cheaper. You'll still need an ECU, but the base engine will be cheaper.

All depends what you want from it, how much you're willing to spend and how easily you can source the parts. There is a thread on here somewhere outlining the ST170 turbo option so that would probably be worth a read if you can find it.

The ST170 motor will run on a DEEP Mondeo ECU as that's how my brothers is running until the new ECU and bodies goes on.
