Default bmw e60 2 litre m sport fuel consumption

hi all
im running a e60 2 litre m sport diesel
my question is this
ive had it live mapped and it does go very well
but on the obc it says the car is doing 28 to the gallon
I reset the computer and drove like miss daisy but to be fair its all round town
and it went back to 28 to the gallon
is this normal?
by the way its a 6 speed manual
anyone else running one of these?
cheers in advance

Disregard what the computer is saying. Note your how many miles you do on a full tank, then see how many litres go in when you fill it up. You can then work out your true average MPG.

Both the 520 and the 530s have never been known to be very good on fuel mind.

Check your thermostats, they can massively effect your mpg

ive changed the waterpump and thermostat
to be honest I think ill fill the tank and work it out that way
I have a niggling feeling its doing better than the computer suggests
I also run a disco diesel and that does high twenties and it does way
better than that

On my 3.0D there are two and if both fail or army changed together u get really poor mpg.

There is a hidden menu on the E60 which shows you the temp of the car.
If they don't get into the high 80's they are shot and needs changing

I've just got a 530d and the OBC MPG doesn't match the analog dial nor what fuel i'm putting in.

Their are some area's you need to check though, check your running temp by holding down the clock reset button for 6-7 seconds when you it changes by pressing the button skip through to option 19 (before you start this add up the last numbers in your vin this will give you your unlock code) so when at option 19 it will then move to the next section where you have to skip through to your number then once there it will unlock and choose option 7 this will bring up your engine running temp - if around 70-75 degree then your looking at both stats need changing if around 80 then just EGR.

After that check you breather pot - but this you have to remove lots of parts including bulkhead trays, strut brace, engine cover and then air filter cover - the breather is the rectangle shaped part behind that with 4x 5mm allen key bolts - your looking for the vortex system and not a Loo roll style - these parts are advised to change upon every 4th oil change

looking under my bonnet
on the left side theres a air filter under a cover shaped like a loo roll
ive changed the thermostat on the water pump when I replaced the water pump
so ive got a thermostat on the egr?
as yours is a 3 litre and mine a 2 litre are they the same?
and the thing about your obc doesn't seem to match the fuel your putting in rings a bell
my disco does a measurd 27 mpg and my bm says 27 on the obc but I don't feel im putting
half as much fuel in the bm as the disco
ps all the mileage on the bm is heavy stop start traffic
ill check my running temp and report back
cheers for the reply appreciated

The loo roll filter needs scraping and either run an open breather which mine has from standard or a vortex system.

The EGR stat is at the front - image 13
