On my kenwood it comes out miles as default. You then set it to where you actually want it to sit in normal operation, in regards to distance and angle. Once you have done this it everytime you power the unit on it goes to this postion. To give you an idea the screen actually comes out the depth of the head unit as default
This won't be a lot of use, but somebody had the same problem, can't remember what car, but sure they used a spacer to move the head unit out of the dash by 10mm or so, to clear the dash...
Probably easier to put it in the console, but a bit low down for a screen.. I managed to get a Pioneer 6 disc changer in the console and used the front panel of an old Ford amp to cover it, so it couldn't be seen. Or, would be a lot of fucking about, but would look good in where the heater vents are!
I've seen it done, but doubt it's easy...
