Thumbs up Spec afr numbers

Hi people, just mainly after advise on what AFR readings i should be looking at on the cars setup and what sort of ignition timing to go for. Running cone filter, full scorp. exhaust, uprated Pace inter-cooler, Vernier cam, and a T34 turbo around 20 psi. Any advise to what readings would be a big help thanks

The turbo is a Enlarged .42 A/R Compressor Housing, T34 Compressor Wheel, Enlarged Back Plate, Left Hand Thread High Temperature shaft, Uprated .48 Turbine housing, Uprated 360 Degrees Thrust Bearing, Uprated 360 Degrees Stainless Steel Thrust Collar, Staggered "Step Gap" High temperature oil seal so i guess its a stage 3 ?

Anyone one with any useful comments ..................lol

Fueling is your issue, the MFI system will struggle to flow enough fuel to keep a safe AFR with that turbo, if you manage it, you will end up cruising extremely rich.

5th injector to me is a no no......, asking for hasle i think, i mean im a mechanic by trade and build rally cars and can live map any modern car using swift tune or winols etc and set up carb systems (no rolling road at my spot for in depth stuff) but the RS turbo is a new system to me and keen on it, its fueling isnt to bad looking at the readings im getting, a cruse speed at the moment is around a reading of 12-13.3, idle is around 14.5 and on full boost around 11-12. Are them figures miles out. like i say this engine is a good one but i have spares as had a few rs turbos, after talking to turbo systems with a running fault he guided me through the electric and i have gone away and looked into that system which is more advanced than i thought and clever i think. even the amal system i think is a STRONG point not something to be taken off like a lot do !. I need it setting up, i dont know where to go as MSD are full in blackpool till December (mid) which i think is a long wait but ideal be nice to have some sort of guide in my head so when im on track/race days know how safe i am. Thanks

Those AFR's are fine (12 is a bit lean on boost though really) and if you've checked for det at full load WOT then just hope it stays in tune.

the det is the thing to watch for once the a/f'r's are spot on. id back the advance off to 8 degrees, esp at the boost your running. mine was setup at 1 bar at the std 12 degrees. was excellent to drive both on and off boost even with a bigger turbo. it lasted 2 years until a high speed run flat out in 5th ended my fun. a melted piston, and also some real strange wear/shapes that the pistons had become in the valve cut out area.they were essentially egg shaped. I think det reared its ugly head rather than my intial thoughts on it running lean. the a/f guage will be a useful tool but also keep a close eye on what the ignition side is doing if you can. what is it that people don't like about the 5th injector? ive heard plenty of people say iyts a bad move but I cant remember the reason behind it

Lean mixture may have caused it to detonate, unless the ECU failed and wasn't retarding the spark as it should (common problem with MFI ECU's), or one of a few other things! lol

There is some very clever guys on here, shame there a trade that is vanishing, alot of people i have spoke to and listen to just say what they hear not actually knowing anything which is abit sad. like i say i work on early Dave Brooks engines on MK1 escorts and things like that and modern cars but my love of the cars from the 80s/90s that have so much tuning open to them and MFI systems etc seems a dyeing knowledge just wish i could shadow one of these guys and go back to been a coffee bitch for them and leave my garage for a while lol lol

Thanks mate, yes I run a small tuning company, I won't mention the name as I'm not a paid trader on here so it wouldn't be right.

He means he is not paying for this forum to be listed as a trader. So he can't promote his company. It has nothing to do with a list that isn't up to date
