We've got a 2002 mk6 1.4 petrol fiesta. We bought it earlier this year as a cheap runaround for the mrs, it ran fine for about 6 odd months then all of a sudden, it sounded like the back box went! I bought a new centre section and back box and gave it a mini service of, spark plugs, oil and filter and air filter, but it still sounds like the exhaust is blowing and it smells really rich! Any ideas what it could be? Cheers people!

 

Check front of the exhaust, especially the manifold.
If the manifold is leaking then the Oxygen sensor produces a lean signal and the engine-ecu starts enriching and enriching and ....
That could explain the smell of fuel.

Ah, i will check that. It smells exhausty, not of petrol though. I'll have a look at the manifold at the weekend though! Cheers!

 

Sure it's not the cat? Could be worth a diagnostic check and emissions check at an mot centre. Is it using more fuel?

 

Hi Richie, sorry mate, not been on here for a while! Don't think it's using more fuel. My misses hasn't moaned about having to put loadsa petrol in it!! The Mot isn't due till next year. I'll have to look at the manifold and cat at the same time i reckon. As i said, i've replaced the rest of the system so i suppose there's not a lot else it can be really! Cheers for the replies!
