Default teamSPB : Kevins 1974 VW Beetle audio build : Pioneer/Gladen Audio/AudioSystems

Hi everyone,

This is a build we started many months ago but had to stop while the interior was being trimmed.

Some history of the car;

The car has been in Kevin's family since 1979 and he is the second owner of the car. Himself, his father, his sister etc all used to drive the car at one point or another and it is still in the family to this day.

Last year, Kevin was in the process of getting the car fully rebuild from ground up. When it was going back together, he wanted a nice sound system to compliment the vehicle on his long drives.

After sitting down with Kevin and working through the requirements of the system, it was decided to use the following equipment;

Pioneer P88RS headunit
Audio Systems 100.2 amplifier for the front components
Audio Systems 280.2 amplifier for the subwoofers
Gladen Audio RS165 components
3 x Gladen Audio RS8 8inch subwoofers
Ground Zero cabling
2 Bulk kits of Silent Coat sound deadening
Custom build enclosures for components and subwoofers

What was immediately decided was we were not going to cut holes into the original door cards to just 'lash' the speakers in. We would make kick builds to house the components so if needed, the car can be returned to stock and the audio system removed with no trace of it ever being there.

Right, time for some pics!

The 8's are great little subs!

The deadening is heavy but not massively...a bulk kit is around 10-15kgs in weight or there abouts!

No need mate, its not a mega powerful install and the owner doesnt really listen to the music overly loud...he just wanted something that was pleasing to the eye and be able to play Reggae

Hardly any of the cars I do rattle if you let me go mad with them

He wont be listening to the music loud anyway...

Mind you, any rattles will be masked by how loud the exhaust is lol!

Paint work wise its had a full respray Hence why the windows etc were out in some pictures

So when you make a bass box like the one in the pics above how do you mount them to the car.

We gave the car to the trimmers fully working, and we got it back with everything ripped apart and not working...great!

The company who put the split charge system in didnt do a very good job, so I took it upon myself to sort out the wiring issues as I dont like people being taken for a ride especially when they are paying good money for work to be completed!

Earth point where the second battery was grounded...still had primer under it and wasnt making proper 'ground' contact

Properly ground back, cleaned with thinners and panel wipe

The power cables were re-routed slightly by the trimmer so they didnt interfere with the rear seat (told him they wouldnt touch the seat but he wouldnt listen). We also added brackets so everything was bolted down securely and unable to move

are the batteries supposed to live under the rear seats then or have you used that space for them?

Glenn, there is wadding inside the box...its the same sort of stuff you get inside duvets etc. It slows the air movement down and 'tricks' the subs into thinking the box is bigger than it actually is. This in turn helps with low end response and smooths the response curve out a bit...long story short, it can give you slightly deeper bass in a sealed box lol

Cheers guys! TBH it is pretty tame...its more of a sound quality install...get into it, play any type of music you want, and enjoy the sound! Pure Audio Bliss I like to call it!

There was always going to be a abit of a compromise as we didnt want to hack up any original panels etc and the car, if ever need be, could be turned back to standard pretty easily. Ideally, I would have liked to have raised the tweeters into the a pillars, but again, the amount of work would have exceeded the budget way too far and would have meant altering the lines of the dash etc which we didnt want.

Saying that, I got a text off Kevin from France saying he was loving the drive and the audio listening to some Bob Marley in the sun haha!

Lovely car, and I love the fact that it can all come out and no-one would know it had ever been in there. No hacking, no cutting etc.

Superb.
