I always feel apprehensive as much as excited picking up a new car, then it's always joyful bringing it home

Have fun

I started looking at 6k Audi a4s then thought we would get an 8k x5 but then realised 8k wasn't a very good one so went to 9.
Then actually looked at 1 at 10k that was shit.
Found a blinding facelift old shape at 11.5k spoke to the fella the day he advertised it and sounded perfect.
Rang the next day to put a deposit down and it was sold
I was so upset.

Then I saw this one which was a lot more money but for some reason I threw the budget out the window and bought it. No idea why lol.
But it's a lovely motor.
3.0d single turbo so not fast.
Not very good on fuel but has a couple of bits I need to do.
Got to reset the gearbox, throttle and ecu adaptions as it's learnt the way the previous owner drives. Also it runs very cold (68* instead of the std 92*) so needs a new egr thermostat and engine coolant main stat.
That should make quite a difference.
Then I will clean out the inlet tract and throttle and get some injector cleaner in it.

Aparently the dpf won't regenerate if the engine doesn't get hot enough so I have no idea how long it's needed the thermostats doing so the dpf could need a regen plus the egr isn't working properly as it's too cold too.

Then look into a dpf, egr and cat removal then map it.

But i want something that will do at least 40mpg. No idea what yet tho!

Yea the dpf filter now has a visual check. ie they look to see it hasn't been removed. I will just knock the insides out. But leave the casing there.

If you want any decent mpg stay well away from an X5 lol
I got a 3.0d and expected at least 25mpg but when I got it the clock showed 19!

It needs a couple of little bits doing but doubt that will get much better.
Even on the Mway at 65 I only saw 26 briefly!

Yep, this is true, 2 of my mates have 330Ds that had DPF lights on and both were cured with new 'stats.

Some conditions here..

Regeneration of particulate filter DDE5.0/ 6.0/ 6.2
To enable regeneration of the particulate filter, regeneration must be requested in the DDE control unit.

The regeneration is requested in that the consumed fuel since the last regeneration is set to a maximum value in the DDE control unit.
The regeneration is started at the next trip as soon as the coolant temperature has reached a value of at least 75 °C and the exhaust-gas temperature before cat. has reached a value of at least 240 °C. Moreover, the fuel level must be at least 10 litres.

The best possible effect of the regeneration is achieved if the vehicle is operated for around 20 minutes at a speed of at least 60 kph that is as constant as possible as of the start of the regeneration. Experience has shown that non-urban driving achieves the best regeneration results.

That's good to know.
I've ordered the stats and will be taking it to my mates garage on saturday to fit them and get it on the computer
Then on Sunday I'm going to gatwick to pick up my parents so can give it a good blast down the Mway and clear it all out.

Well today I took it to my mates workshop to give it a once over.
We plugged it into a diagnostics

A few faults got deleted and didn't come back.
The last dpf regen failed and i think it's due to the fact the egr cooler thermostat was knackered so the car never got to Full temp.
I've fitted a new egr stat and the car gets hotter quicker and up to full temp now (saw 90* on my 5 min journey home)
I've now got tv in motion,
There's a few software updates available so it's going back for them next week.

I did a throttle reset which has made a big difference.
With the throttle and gearbox reset it's now a lot smoother and faster.

I'm going to gatwick tomorrow so hopefully it will regen the dpf and learn my driving style.

I will report back once it's home and hopefully running better with better mpg lol.

I may also throw some dpf/egr/injector cleaner into the tank too.

I couldn't find anything mechanically that needs doing. All the fluids are new as it's just had a service so all I gotta do is clean and drive it lol.

Anyone else got any suggestions of things to do?

How do you do a throttle re-set? Does this make the gearbox learn again? Im sure ive read somewhere how to do it but cant find it now

From memory. you hold the throttle down for 30 seconds with the ignition on.

This is the throttle reset

Works with any car that has Driver Adaptive Electronic Controlled Transmission.

1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.
2. Turn the key to the on (not start) position, the position just before the starter turns over. BMW: press start button – foot off brake - all idiot lights on.
3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position. BMW: All idiot lights on.
4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off position". BMW: foot off brake press start button - all idiot lights now off (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
5. Wait a full 2 minutes for a full electronic alignment. Don't remove the key.
6. Start engine, drive the car, notice the difference.

Gearbox:

You put your key in/hit start ONCE so the electronics of the car come on but it is not started.

Then hold down the gas, past the downshift point to the floor for 25-30 seconds straight.

If you listen, at about 25s exactly you will hear some "noise" and that is the tranny "resetting" itself to factor specs

Like I am sure you know these cars are smart and the auto tranny is no exception. It adapts and learns your driving style-but the catch is, which is why I noticed an improvment. Apparently it "learns" for about 1000 miles and then kind of "locks" those settings in so-to-speak. So however you drove the car off the lot or whover drove it off the lot-it was really those first 1k that determined how the autobox shifted itself.

The "noise" you hear is like a hard drive wirring noise, I noticed it when I did it and it definately makes a difference

Since doing these jobs I put 1/2 a tank of Vpower diesel in and went to gatwick.
I saw 30-32mpg on the Mway as an average and the highest I saw was 35, around town seems to be 24 with the highest 27

So it's improved.

But more importantly it's a lot quicker and smoother.

I want to remove the egr and dpf then map it rich.
But I don't have money for that at the mo.

First job is face lift M sport bumpers.
To fit the front I need new wings
and the rears need new 1/4s (small plastic panels)
Then paint the grilles, wheels, wheel arches.
And carbon badges all round then the cars finished lol.

Interesting to hear of your experiences with the new one.
I've got a '55 3.0d and like it a lot. Had it a year now. Prefer it to the Cayenne S, and Forester STI I had before it, even tho far less pokey.
I'm averaging 31.7mpg for last several thousand miles (mixed daily commute 60m).
I drive it like an old woman though, so should be getting decent no's. I do like not having to fill it up until well after 550miles on a tankful though - I hate petrol stations so the less I have to visit the better!
When I was looking at one, I had a nosey in the facelift to see what I couldn't afford. As nice as it was it seemed like they had no glovebox and the centre bin split opening thingy didn't appeal. Not like I could afford it mind!
My bmw specialist has the twin turbo D version, remapped and pulling huge torque numbers and he loves it to bits
Cheers
Iain

Cars in for some upgrades

Wheels are being refurbed and painted gun metal grey.

Bumpers, arches, grilles and bump strips are all going body coloured.

I'm happy with it.
