Default Escort GTi - Which ECU?

Anyone know which EEC system a 1997 R plate Escort GTi uses?

Is it EEC IV or EEC V?

I need to get the fault codes read and the garage I took it to could not communicate with the ECU. I think they were using the wrong reader.

I have a 16 pin port by the passenger footwell which points to an OBD2 system (Hence EEC V) but I read somewhere that Ford used this port with the old EEC IV management for a couple of years on the changeover.

Any of you knowledgeable folks have any ideas?

Thanks

Thats what I thought, I think they saw the port type and were trying to use an EEC V fault code reader on it.

Should it say the type on the ECU itself anywhere? I don't particularly want to unplug it as this would reset any stored codes.
