Default Alternators

Had my 3 door running today for the 1st time in months but the alt has packed up

Am I right in saying I should get a 4x4 one and swap the pulleys?

Saphs can provide 20 A more, but that's not going to be of any benefit.

But yes you could use one and if 4x4 with the serpentine pulley, swap it.

the windings inside.

I'd use the bigger of the 2 and if Possible run a new cable form alt to battery as this one gets hot by the exhaust and creates more resistance.

The choice is yours

Not unless you have extras that draw a lot of energy, hence why Ford did not fit one in the first place!

Saph's have additional electrical equipment.

Electric rear windows and central locking motors can't think of anything else

If your running good power I'd use a 90amp and also if you have a decent hifi too.

The front windscreen, that's the biggest draw!

The power of the car is not a factor.

As said , use a 90 amp, although bulk charge in any short time kills any and all batts.
3 doors where designed with there power requirements in mind.(what went wrong with fans!)
Running a 044 fuel certainly increases demand from your alternator along with high power amps etc.If the feed cable(to Batt) has seen better days and losing efficiency due to resistance/heat the situation is amplified.
I recently replaced my charging feed cable from my alternator to my battery and gained a volt over a cable distance of two metres!

Food for thought, cable is no different to a water pipe where flow=amps/current/voltage=pressure/resistance=size.

Sorry for going off on one.

My Best.

Tim.

the 90a ones were harder to find when i was looking, plus there are several different fitting opetions so make sure you know what yours looks like before you shell out on one

the granada's all used the 90a version so you may have more luck there than just looking for sierra items

No 3DR has a HFS (not standard at least) in fact from what I can make out I should think Ford invented/patented it around 88.

I agree, if running big power go for the bigger one and uprate the lead from the alternator to the battery, I used a 2.0 mondeo alternator on my saph, it fitted quiet nice, nice and big too
