Morning!

So i keep looking at them and for the price of about 15-17k it will buy me a car with 100k on the clock.

Just thinking next year to get something like this for a sunday car!

How likely are these to go wrong?

Also are they worth the milage they give back?

the problem with the m6 is the m5.
m6 costs more, is heavier, not as quick.
if things go wrong, well, it's an M car, so yes it's not usually cheap. front brakes, save over a grand for when they need replacing. that's just a taste of M car ownership.

M5 will be cheaper and as nice if not better in my opinion, i'm ll about getting an M3 at the moment, more of the handling for me.

 

I said the same thing but she said if we are to get one it has to be the M6 and not M5... I like the M5 a lot but for one it does not have a carbon roof

 

it's a £15k car with £65k car running costs. Very nice, but not cheap.

 

If you can afford to do it then get one. I've had two M6's and a 630i Cab and they were all pretty much hassle free motoring. I much prefer the 6's to the 5's for looks alone, even though my current car is a 5 All of them had the BMW warranty and I personally wouldn't ever entertain the idea of having one without it.

I'll probably end up with another one at some stage and that'll probably be either a 630i or 635d. I wouldn't touch the 645's as they like to smoke more than me.

 

I had an M6 cabrio from a year old, the depreciation for the first owner was savage and the depreciation for me was merely eye watering was losing a grand a month, add that to a grand a month fuel costs. My average mpg was 14 and if you're not driving it like that you might as well have a 630i.
It is a heavy car so tyres are a major expense too along with the brakes.
Personally I wouldn't do it. I had m cars for 3 years and warranty claims were £20,000 in that time. If you can afford to lose £15k then do it but a better bet would be leasing a new one. There are some cracking deals available.

 

Very good advice, I had an m6 cab from new & It was a cracking car with the looks to boot. Wasn't cheap to run but I didn't give a shit as it was a company car. An easy way to put it, I had a 360 at the time which required less warranty work than the m6. I had lots of issues with breaks, fluid leaks & excess front right tyre wear. However these issues were put right & the car was great. I suppose what I'm getting at is the car was new & a company car so no personal expense, I'm not sure if I would like to own 1 personally.


Your move mate, lots of very nice motors out there in your price bracket. Porsche 964 gets my vote.

 

Everything about them is expensive. IMO the only good thing about them is the engine note a healthy t34 Cosworth will give them a run for their money (until higher speeds). For £15-£17K I'd look at other alternatives.

my mate had one, he sold it after it cost him £1800 for an alternator and about £20 of juice just by starting it!
he had it 2 weeks and he bought a low mileage one

I know they cost alot to run but was hoping as a sunday car i would do maybe 100 miles a week and use a work car for the rest of the week.

I was worrying about costs to fix them thats why i wanted to know if they break alot. Sounds like ill need a deep pocket to fix one.

Also insurance on one of these is not that bad (im 24 with 0 ncb)

Parts wont be cheap. I bet you cant get a pair of discs for less than 70 quid.I bet the pads will be more than 20 quid too.

Don`t take this the wrong way but the M6 isn`t "quite" special enough just for the weekends. The beauty of the M series cars is that they are everyday cars with an extra performance. There is an exception possibly in the Z4M Coupe as it`s borderline usable everyday, well it was for me anyhow.
I had 15-16K budget for a weekend fun car so I bought my westie but the wife hates it. She hated the Z4MC as well both are VERY stiffly sprung.

£15k weekend car would have to go on the best 911 I could lay my hands on.

 

A lad I know, who's on here, has a V10 M5... and he is getting comically bad MPG, he's regularly seeing single figures. I know it's a weekend car, but fuck that.

I was thinking about changing my E46 M3 for an E90/92 M3 or a V10 M5/M6 until I did some research on them... The E9x series M3 wasn't going to be a big enough jump from my E46 to justify the price difference for me and the running costs of the V10 Ms scared me on a computer screen, I think I'd have a mild heart attack if I was living that for real.

I was looking at cars in the £20-25k bracket, give or take a few... and would ONLY consider an AUC from a BMW dealer if going the V10 route, paying a premium at the front end for the warranty rather than living in fear of something letting go on an un-warrantied car.

weekend car / toy.... take a look at the b5 audi s4 that was posted on here a few days ago, over 600bhp .

thats what id be looking at , but that might not be your thing.

or get a nice older m5 either e34 or e39 and hopefully the running costs over the time you own it will be softened with the lack of deprecation and potential increase in value!

Ran a M5 for a few years, even took it on track at ford fair

MPG is dire was seeing 12mpg when the wife was driving it, did about 9 when i used it.

Before i brought it i read all about how bad the MPG was but thought if you drove it carefully you would get 20 mpg out of it but you just could get that.
The only time i could see 20 mpg was on long trips IE driving to Milan with cruse set at aground 80mph

That was the main reason for getting rid of it to be honest, great sounding car, could do with some more torque but get it over 100 mph and it used to fly to 175

Would not get one without full BMW service and there warranty.

 

That's so true, performance is good up to 100 but 100 to 170 is fantastic.

 

pretty much down to them weighing loads, my 330 is the same, ok upto 100, then goes so much better.
bugger with mpg below double figures though, bad enough getting 20mpg average.

 

I've just been looking through some of the receipts for when I had mine and it wasn't the cheapest thing to run except the 630i. I'd forgotten how much was spent on fuel, servicing AND tyres. Plus there they had a fair bit of warranty work done as well, although I didn't get butt fucked too bad with residual values.

Not sure if it's in your budget but what about an Aston Martin?
