Default Oppliger Motorsport – Impostor?

At the beginnig oft he year I bought a Coswworth YB N/A Motor, promised 240 – 250 hp and 1000 km mileage, at Oppliger Motorsport.
To the test turned out that the engine made noise and had 206 hp only.

After opening of the engine revealed the following:

Chipped piston on the cylinder head, there by annealed and connecting rod bearing damage.
Welded stuts on the engine block
One camshaft has beat traices
One camshaft bearing cap is of a different engine.

as above speak to them. its a company so I guess you have at least 1 year guarantee/warranty and even if you bought the product in january, its not too late for a claim. good luck.

True, but if he's building a project car he may well not have got round to installing the engine till now if he's been working on other things.....

Oppliger seem well regarded on here, sure they'll sort it.

I bought the engine in May. After installation in July, I've written several times Mr. Oppliger. Unfortunately, no concession on his part.

I'd email them and call them, but don't expect a speedy response
Not being funny but I wouldn't have touched the engine, unless you'd spoken with them first, you end up just wasting your own time and money doing that and there is always an element of doubt over who/when/where was responsible for the damage.

Not good to hear I'm thinking of buying a block and crank off him as he gives very good prices! Been chatting to him on Facebook about it 500 for a standard grind crank and 650 for a 200 block

hello,

the engine you bought was used (ok with 1000 miles) and was working on a westfield with dry sump.you have ask to buy the engine with normal wet sump.

its not my fault if you was on the dyno without set the carburators and the ignition.the engine on your dyno was running very lean and with probably to much advance for your fuel.this is the reason for the piston damage.
Ok the engine had a liner fitted and a different cam cap on the head but this is not a problem.

its absolutely not true about not responding emails as i have all the emails with exchanged during summer.i have offer him to give an other 205 block and a set of pistons but instead of solve the difficult situation between us he prefered send a letter from a lawyer.

the engine was originally coming from UK and we did some work on it.

So he bought a second hand untested engine and is complaining because it went wrong?

isnt that part of the game? you buy second hand unwarrantied bits, you accept the risk.

If I buy an engine with a carburetor, then I assume that the nozzle assembly is correct. Therefore, the piston can not but strike the cylinder head! What good is a block and piston when the connecting rod is annealed

Of which was never mentioned. You said (of witnesses) the 40mm carbs are better for the street. But there were always built 48er carburetor.

I don't think you have anything to complain about, if oppliger got the engine in a running track car and it ran ok, there not gonna strip the engine down to every single component and check it before selling it are they. Then if you've put smaller carbs on it and wacked up the advance I'm not surprised by the bore marks and bearing shell.

arp studs in a 205 block

bet its the 2nd stud exhaust side...

If it was set up correctly and not stripped then op might have done something to help you out.

Mr. Oppliger did not say that the engine off 2 Hand. He explained that the engine was built by him and is just run-in. In addition, no smaller carburetors were mounted.
I knew that the engine is from a race car, I would have never bought the engine!

looks like a clasic case of the engine was built, the engine was used, it developed a problem, it was sold off to some wolly with the hope of no comeback, i dont think people realise this happens alot more then what people think

let explain the situation

the engine was already on a westfield bought from UK,the engine had a problem

so we strip it pieces, the engine spec was not good for road use as the cams was too wild, the carbs too big....

we rebored the block, change pistons and rods, new engine bearings, new multilayer head gasket, and new fast road cams from newman.

after this the engine was back on the customer car and he did with it the running in for about 1000km

by the time the customer was after more power and more usable engine so he asked for a Turbo YB engine.

the engine setting with these cams and new cr (compression ratio) was never done for after 5500rpm to 8000 rpm as it was in running in

when the German (turbo965) customer bought it he asked me to remove the dry sump system and i put a normal wet pump,he also told me that he will fit smaller carbs.

as he was on dyno with the engine....why dont stop pushing if you see with the wide band that fueling is lean and with knock sensor there is detonation
