Hi was wondering if anybody can help I own a 2002 ford escort van 1.8 non turbo
My mate who is a professional mechanic recently replaced the timing belt and the other belt that gets changed at the time he used all the proper tools for the job locked of pumps and set timing perfect after changing belt however after building the engine back up and starting it the engine has became very noisy like an knocking noise . My friend said this is a disel knock but he has no idea how to fix it . This is where yous come in can any one help to explain how to fix this . The van was running perfectly before work was done

Does it smoke
Did he adjust the fuel pump to take the slack from the belt
Try to put the pump back where the old marks where
If that makes sense

I believe they have a advance solenoid on the diesel pump which can so e how be affected by changing the belts! I had it years ago and put a new solenoid in and was fine after! I did get told the reason why but it escaped me know as it was a long time ago

sounds like the pump advances, try knocking it back a little and see if that helps
