my mk 2 escort long time coming!
well, time to start a resto thread on my mk2.
ive had this car roughly ten years now, it was bought as a complete car with a 2.1 pinto for the meagre sum of £700!! (if only they were still that cheap lol). i sold the engine bucket seats and a few othe bits and got the majority of the £700 back so the car stood me at sweet fa.
then one day i took a trip to a nice fellow called paul linfoot and came away with a nice freshly rebuilt 2wd cossie engine, gearbox ecu etc etc....
that is were it all came to a go slow for me, as i had inherited a bit of cash that i used to buy the engine then got distracted and bought an rs turbo
ran that for a few years while saving up to do the mk2, got myself a nice 10 grand saved to do the mk2 so as anyone would went out instead to buy a 3 door cossie lol!
anyway now they are both gone, out of my system and i have a few quid in my backpocket i thought now is the time to do the car i have really wanted since i was a kid

im only going to get to work on this mainly at weekends so updates may be a little slow as im running a business which includes spraying cars so obviously i cant be chopping welding and grinding a mk2 if we have just laid some fresh paint down, but here is the progress so far

trimmed down a sierra tunnel as i wanted a factory look, however i should not have bothered its far too wide at the front and will be too close to the chassis legs to get a decent exhaust tunnel in so that idea has been scrapped, will go the old school way with large square tunnel and raised prop tunnel

so the postman came, i cant say thankyou enough to james nici and stu at motorsport developments for this the deal they did me was great damn near £80 cheaper overall than direct from airtec and it came straight from airtec lol! once again i have had a fantastic faultless service from msd. best in the business in my eyes




started trimming the inner front panel to check fitment

should get plenty of cold air here

rad fitted, sits nice between the chassis legs



when i remove the front panel which needs replacing anyway, i will box the cooler in proper to make sure 100% of the air goes through it and not around it!

now a little repair, the previous owner had butchered the battery tray off so this needed repairing

damage removed

new piece welded in

ground the welds up

from the rear, still needs a little grinding

so moving on to the bulkhead gussets cleaned up the lower corners, used a bit of zinc primer and did a little seam weld on the chassis that i wont be able to get to afterwards

wont win any awards for neat welding but felt like shit all day plus they will be covered with seam sealer, and they have lots of penetration so more than up to the job

yes it all adds up mate, i was lucky really buying mine 10 years ago when they were peanuts if i was to start from scratch now it would probably cost 3grand for a shell in the condition this ones in lol!
still tho i reckon i will have spent near 10 grand by the time its finished probably more tbh its easy to get carried away!

Looks a great project this and the shell looks in quite good nick. Doing a Mk2 RS2000 myself its very rusty and going to be a long term project .Notice we both in same neck of the woods
lots of mk1 and 2s surfacing up our way bud, get a thread going on yours if i can help you or offer advice in any way i will do
they are all worth saving in my opinion mate, you should go on turbosport if your not already on, some of the cars they rescue on there are unbelievable

well its been a few weeks since i did an update so thought id better drag myself to the garage and have a play
started mocking up the gearbox tunnel


need to shape the floor to the tunnel a little

the screw was temporary!

yes yes i cut too much out trying to fit the sierra tunnel previously lol

started cleaning and zinc priming the bulkhead ready for the strengthening plates ive made

first two parts in bulkhead feels far less flimsy allready!



third part in, will do the other side when i have decided where my engine loom will be coming through the bulkhead as i will be relocating the hole thats allready there as the cossie wiring loom grommet fits it perfectly

and thats it for now folks im off to put some aftersun on my welding burns lol
and also just ordered a new welding mask as i cant see fuck all out of the one im currently using lol
