Hello guys, I bought a 92 Sierra 1.8TD with pretty high miles and it was standing for a few years but the car looks like an amazing first car project, the owner was kind enough to say that t he car had trouble starting at winter due to low compression, could someone who knows a bit more then me about that engine tell me if they have some usual "illneses" that would cause that, and should I change to make sure that the car will be reliable in the future?

 

Low compression could be head gasket or piston rings!

not starting in the winter sounds like glow plugs!

 

I would be checking to see if the glow plugs are working first.

 

Glow plugs were my initial thought as well, but it could still be caused because of low compression (piston rings/worn valve sleeves)?

 

I have had two 1.8td,one hatch and a sapphire also non turbo escort.Lazy bloody things but a pretty good motor.One thing I found with them that was if the battery wasnt up to much they would take a while to start as they never seemed to turn over quick enough.Let the heater plugs run twice and start.

 

get a compression check done.it will be the the last cilinder that has lost compression because of the heat from the turbo.some sierra's are having that trouble.you wont have the trouble in a mondeo because the engine mounted the other way.cheeRs
