A stage 3 car(should be greens) will NOT destroy an E46 M3. Fact. M3 is very very fast once rolling. Above 10mph the M will wipe the cossie.

Greys is different and more power than stage 3...

A stock e46 M3 is quoted as 13.4 @ 104mph so very similar to a Stage 3 Cossie. Given same driver it would be a very close call.

I do like m3's and m5's a lot but not long after the m3 e46 came out I had a rather large race across 3 round about's and a few long straights ( the basingstoke ring road lol )
This was when I had a 350 set up and he was under the impression he was going by me! At no point at all was he as fast as my saff and if the look on his face was any thing to go by he was not happy lol

the thing is to beat an m3 you need a high tuned cossie, the m3 came out the factory like that, plus most m3 owners can't drive.
don't get me wrong i love cossies, around the streets a cossie will always win, due to the torque,
but would i swap my cossie for an nice m3 ........ yes in a heart beat.

I'd love to see your stage 3 against my M3 lol.
I have a midly tuned E36 M3 GT which regularly beats 400bhp cossies lol.
I have friends with genuine 400bhp cars that just can't shift me lol.

And in the 11 years I've owned it its broken down once and that was my own fault lol. Other than maintainance they're brilliant cars. Mine gets abused every time it goes out. That isn't the same with my mates cossies lol.

This debate is always running....lol

But 99.9% of the time the M3/M5 ect are TOTALLY STANDRAD as they left the factory and the Cosowrths are tuned......Thats the difference....

As said, get the M3 moving and they are VERY VERY fast cars...

Also the BMW will stay at 160MPH all day every day........where as the Cosworth owner will "Usually" flash 150 then drop back to 80mph....lol

Dont get me wrong, i love Cosworths....but after owning an M3, they are WORLDS apart.

dont get me wrong I like e46 m3's a lot! Much better car than a Stone Age cosworth lol
But the point I made was a standard one will not live with a genuine stage 3 saff! The m3 weighs not far off 1600kg any one who says they are faster has iver raced a cosworth that don't have 350 or haven't full stop!
But like you say the m3 is out the box fast and a tuned one is a very different story. But if you was to compare each as a tuned car then the m3 would be left for dust as a tuned road car! as the sky's the limit with a yb these days

Isnt it Tiff. They do my head in lol.A cossie has old 1980s technology where the M3s n 5s are a lot newer.A lot can change in 10 years technology wise.

Now if you wanna compare Evos and imprezas against M3s n 5s well thats fair enough.

M3's are slow, i did one with my fiesta! He was turning off though and waiting for traffic his side...

Pretty fast when pushing me to come by

Never drove a M3 but sure someone told me there not a drivers car like a cossie is.

a tuned m3 would be much faster, turbo on an m3 will put out big power, so if you set a tuning budget on both, the M car would piss it.
i like an older Ford turbo car, but there is something about a car that has had loads more development to begin with.
M3 or cossie, well that's the question i'm faced with for the next motor.

Got to agree entirely i sold my st3 to get my cossie and tbh the st3 was 100% better car faster more comfortable and the m3 is a better car still !I have spent a lot of time on the cossie to get it to be a smooth nice drive and ive got it the best i can for the age of the car but its still miles away from a newer car there just old classic cars that need a bit of love and mine is stage 3 its slow but if i wanted a powerfull car id go buy one that handles and power lol

If your talking tuned a yb is tryed and tested never seen a big power road going tuned m3 so no idea.
There's cosworth's on here that I cannot see a modded m3 getting any wear near on the road!

i think it all depends on what you want from a car.
I have had the m3 e46 and also the e39 m5 I have just sold. the m5 is a more refined comfortable car with a lot more "subtle" handling. the m3 is an animal that bites hard. the cosies are a hoot to drive and can be fast if tuned well, but as we will all agree, the m3 and m5 (being newer technology) will sit at 160mph all day. thrash a cossie hard enough and it will blow up.

I am looking for another cossie again, but purely because I am lucky enough to have it as a 3rd car in the garage. the m3 and m5 were wasted being sat doing nothing all week.
I am on the fence with the argument, as it does have 2 sides, but if I were cruising in my m5, no one would bat an eyelid......

cruise in a 3dr, and everyone looks!! that's the difference!!

so to summerise, a modified and tuned ,lighter cosworth with about a 60% power increase will beat a standard heavier car.
what a shock.hold the front page...
and what exactly is meant by "drivers car"?

Technology does not come into it in terms of straight line pace, a stage 3 saph has the same power as an M3, but weighs less, so I would have thought the saph would be faster, not to mention the M3 would have less torque.

I can't ever remember them not being able to sustain there top speed when new, but yes being the youngest car is over 20 years old something obviously may let go, the M3 will be in the same position with age.

Plus the S54 is a highly tuned N/A engine, the YB is a restricted race engine, capable of big power in race trim!

In road trim there just to soft and wouldnt by one would go for a s4/rs4 but stripped and on a track that where they really make sense imo

No idea who told you that, the E46 M3 is one of the finest handling RWD cars ever made.

If you're into cars, you'd accept they're all great cars for different reasons, the Cosworth will always have the nostalgia and that "kick" from a turbo with lairy snaking up the road, the M3 is far more refined and doesn't feel like you're traveling at the speed you are actually doing, and the M5 is a big comfy barge with a rocket up it's arse.

ZM Coupe was the best of the bunch for me, ok not great looks but a great car.

Then the CSL, storming car, mind you i loved all my E30 M3s, not silly fast but one of the best chassis I've driven.

Correct, I heard they are actually a bad choice with a T34, hence the Siemens 55, that said they have been tried and tested all these years, but then where can you do those sorts of speeds for them to become an issue?

the only way in a human mind a cossie handles better is if you like dying because theres 2 elements to cossie handling straight line and death ! So M3 is balanced a fun controlled drive a cossie is a white knuckle ride playing roulette with corners

Would be interesting to go out in a cossie with a 6 degree rear beam fitted.

I know what you mean, but it dosen't really come into it in terms of straight line pace, round a track the M3 would come into it's own.

Remember the Sierra was antiquated when new, only the Granada derived rear beam (thus full independant suspension) seperated it from it's predecessor.

The E30 had a better suspension layout, although it still was not quicker than the Cosworth in any aspect .
