Default Rusty sierras

My saff cossie has been in the bodyshop for over a month now.Its in for new rear arches and a few patches on the sills. The lad from the bs phoned me yesterday about my car and said its not good news.

I went down to see the car and he has cut the bottom of the outer sill off on the ns.Well the inner sill is rotton. There isnt much left of it lol.Aparently you cant get the inner sill section no more. The lad at the bs said he will cut the sill a bit higher and have a better look.He said if not he will have ti cut the hole of the outer sill off to repair the inner sill.

It just git me thinking about these mint cossies which are up for sale for 8k upwards. Will these have to same problem as mine.

You cant see the rust on the inner sill without cutting the outer sill off.

thats what done it for me on my estate mate

there is an inner sill, then the floor pan, plus another bit that goes in the middle before the outer sill

and this was all rotten on mine and after a month welding it up a few years ago with fresh metal it only lasted another 5 or 6 years before it was back to the same condition again and i just couldn't be arsed to put so much work back into it

hopefully the bodyshop will be able to fix it better than i could as they will spray it with stuff and keep it inside, not like mine in the garden in all weathers

don't give up hope

Glenn,

You mention in your first post about them being up for 8k, WHAT about 3dr's that are up for 15-20k and 500s etc, tbf you never know what's hidden in places we can't see or get to.

They're a lottery really pal.

Hope it all works for you anyway matey

Probably one of the biggest reasons I'll never own one again. So many look good on top, but it's not until you have that sort of work done that you find out

sometimes I think people so interested in big wheels, big brakes, big turbo's and big power they neglect the most important thing the body shell because none of the above is any good without anything to bolt them too need to remember they are 20+years old and rusty old fords

Bad news but don't panic any good bodyshop should be able to repair it and treat it properly so that it will last for years. Been there done that with mine! If u use them daily with our harsh winters they rust unfortunately, but they need to be used and I'l be using mine in all weathers when it's done.

Mike Sanders fat in the hollows etc. and you will never have any problems with rust on any car. It will work even after decades/centuries.
This cure is worth every penny.

I had the same bud. Did some outer sill work and found the inner gone too, but caught it in time before it would have needed a shite load of welding and cutting. What makes me laugh is that all the gl's and bog standard sierra that are still about look mint around he rear arches and other areas but the cossie get the rust. Weird or what.

Taxi man... Just goes to show though that you think your car is in decent condition and then you find the dreaded rotty grotty.I will have to take some pics and post them on here.

Bad news mate!

Does make me chuckle when people slate Fords for being rusty though, any car rots unless it's pampered from the factory, kept in a bone dry air tight garage and only driven on sunny days.
Metal rusts! Jap cars are terrible for it as they aren't protected underneath from the factory!

Glenn I was was worried about what i'd find under mine when I started but I must have been lucky its all original paint and panels and it sure doesn't need anything at all

If you look hard enough I seen a car in concourse over the last 3 years and the chassis leg was rotten and simply painted over, if you don't know what your looking for you can get stung

Sounds like my 200sx that, ended up having all 3 layers of the sills replaced on both sides. Solid now though, and I bought it cheap anyway. Know of cars at higher prices that were even worse!

a lot of body shops don't do repairs like this right so it just rots from the inside out
I know some people don't like the stuff but wax oil mixed with engine oil works
my m8 restores old jags Ive seen a load hes done 20+ years ago and there still rot free when any sill work is done he uses a zinc primer and then wax oils inside the sills

He said he is gonna cut the sill a bit higher tomorrow to see if there is any metal to weld to but if not he will have to take the whole sill off.

Went to see the car yesterday. The lad in the bs has cut more of the sill away to reveal more of the inner sill. Its not that bad higher up so the rot is gonna get chopped out then repaired/replaced.

Im going back to the bs tonight to take the front passenger seat out and push the carpet over to the middle so he can crack on with the welding without setting the car on fire.

Mate I've had a few sierras and my mates have too.
And I must say nearly all of them have had very minor rust patches.
near enough every mk5 fiesta I have seen are rust buckets and they are just only 10 years old .
So on a whole a 20 odd year old sierra is doing well compared to the dagenham rot box fiestas

I had a 2001 to mi makinnen Evo 6, was a jap import, and after 3 years of using it on uk roads, the underneath was rusty! Had to have sections welded in all over the place! Don't be put off it mate, you probably just have a bad egg, but once done, you will have the knowledge that its structurally sound!

Hopefully I don't find any rot on mine I haven't so far and everything bar the skirts have been off at some point.

Secret is protecting the car properly, mine was waxoiled everywhere from new - arch liners out and loads sprayed up into the wings/quarters etc. It's something I'll do again if I ever get the car painted.

Jap imports have next to no rust proofing, first thing I'd ever do is cover it!
