Injector Fault

Unhappy Injector Fault

Please help, I was accelerating slowly when I heard a 'clicking' sound. I dropped off the revs but as soon as started to accelerate again the clicking came back. I dropped off the revs again when there was a puff of white smoke and the engine stopped. I pulled over and tried to start the car, the engine turned over but did not start.

The breakdown driver fault coded and got the following:
P1631 Main relay malfunction
P1211 Injector Control pressure sensor above/below desired
P0251 Injector pump fuel metering control A malfunction

After clearing the faults and trying to restart the car, the following code came up:
P2291 Injector pressure too low

I have spoken to my college lecturers (I'm currently studying to be a Technician) but was wondering if anybody else has come across this fault and how they repaired it.

Please help as this is the only way I get to see my son.

The car is a 2001 Mondeo 2.0 TdCi 130

Not great news unfortunately. P1211, and P0251 are notoriously difficult to solve, as they can be any number of things from the actual pump, to the inlet metering valve, to the fuel pressure sensor and a load of things in between.

You have a few options - But first I'd replace the fuel filter with a proper Ford one. If you're lucky, it will be the cause. If not...

1. Replace random parts and hope cures it.
2. Take the car to a Diesel specialist (preferably Delphi) and get it diagnosed properly.
3. Move the car on before it ends up costing you more than it's worth.

Thanks for the advice but was actually looking for somewhere to start! Any kerbside mechanic can change parts to see if it cures the problem but as I'm currently studying level 2 mechanics a bit more in depth advice would be helpful.

Do a fuel pressure test, as if the pressure sensor is faulty it will throw up random fuel faults, as your studying level 2 get someone to take your car to your college as you should be learning about common rail, diesel testing, injector crack, fuel pressure etc, so will learn better hands on

The problem is that it could be any number of things - and even an expert mechanic will be unable to diagnose it properly without the correct equipment.

If you want you can do a leak off test - but ultimately, unless you're lucky and find the fault by swapping parts you'll need the services of an expert.

Have a look at talkford.com at the number of people who have those fault codes - There are LOTS of different solutions.

I followed your advice and took it to college. On a live data feed, the injector pump was generating enough pressure. We checked the high pressure solenoid as this is a common problem (or so I have been told by a delphi specialist) and found that faulty. Further investigation also highlighted a faulty injector relay so am now in the process of changing these before carrying on with further checks. Will keep posted on how things are progressing.

Changed fuel filter, fuel temperature sensor (faulty again) and still no joy. Not getting any fuel to fuel filter so it's now onto lift pump! Can anyone tell me where the Inertia fuel switch is please? Followed Haynes and ford which says passenger side under trim but can't find it.
