got an old lorry with no battery, want to get one to get it running to move it?

but no idea what the lorry is? or what voltage it is, can't really get to the engine, as its a horse box and the cab is fixed.

 

They normaly have 2 batterys.You could always take a bulb out and see if its a 12v bulb or a 24v bulb.

 

if its only one battery its 12v,
two batteries its 24v

 

Should be 24v all lorrys of 7.5 tonne and over are hope this helps

not my lorry, all I've been told is it has no battery fitted, and could I try and get it running so they can move it.

If no battery's prob easy to check a bulb and c what volt it is.

do not assume its 24v just because it has 2 batterys, lots of equipment run 2 batterys in series at 12v.

a simple Ł9 multimeter is all you need

i dont know the exact terminology i just know how it works i deal with it day in day out.

a 24v system will have a + and - terminal joined between the batterys, a 12v will not.
a 12v will run side by side with no + to - joined between them.

i have cat d6 dozers that run 24v with the 3306 engine, i have a cat challenger that runs 3306 engine at 12v, they also used the 3306 engine in old phoeden lorries.

 

99% of trucks with 2 battery's will be 24v I work on trucks and other than an odd Isuzu heap of shit I've never seen a 12v one lol
Plus a multi meter will tell you fuck all if the battery's are missing or flat lol

I think its parallel. I usually find out by plugging something 12v into a power socket. Pop and smoke is 24v

 

Just have a look at the battery's and see how they are connected up. If they are linked together then it 24 and if not its 12. As said don't just assume its 24 because its got two even transits run two battery's one start and one aux.

Yup. Decided a bolt dropper and inverter was a better option.

Although suprised phones charge no issues on 24v.

 

2 12v batteries in parallel is 12v
2 12v batteries in series is 24v

careful please! errors can result in electrical fires!

 

a multimeter will be as much use as a chocolate fire guard if there are no batteries fitted
as said above, pop a bulb out and have a look at the rating.

 

yeah will be doing the bulbcheck tomorrow if I get over to the lorry, didn't get a chance to look at it today

basically story goes, wouldn't start, got a mechanic to look at it, he took the battery for testing ? and that was last year. they need to move it now to trim some trees or something. and I was volunteered into, looking at it, buying new a new battery or 2 and see if I can get it running.

 

Could even be a big van and not even a truck then lol

i will put it in the simplist terms i can think of.
the positive terminals will either both be joined together for 12v so both + terminals will either join together or run both to the starter, or seperate for 24v with one + terminal going to the starter and the second + terminal going to the - of the other battery, its as simple as that.
the battery cable layout will show if its 12v or 24v.

i will take some phone pics tommorrow if it helps of 12v and 24v battery layouts ive got machines sitting here 12v and 24v.

My Volvo is 24V, but has one battery on each side of the wagon.

 

layland daf 45 130 ti euro2 on a p plate.

bulb says 24v tray looks good for two batteries and there is a link bit just sitting in there

 

An f45 will with out doubt be 24v will have the cummins 6 pot in it
I'm shore we fit 2x 600 ish amp hour battery's but I can let you no what Daf spec!

 

that would be great cheers, I've got one 12v battery on charge that was spare, and have another coming tomorrow, probably both wrong size, but hopefully enough to see if it runs to move it for the time being.

Ill mail you what battery's it should have! But there not cheap.
If it turns over and has fuel it should start no worries them engines go on for ever.
Do you have to get it mot'ed?

 

not sure on the MOT thing, but not going to get that involved ( hopefully )

hope , it starts, moves the 10 meters or so, then can point them in the right directing of correct batteries etc, and let them get on with it, i know they have taken it for plating before? ( guess the mot equiv, for lorrys )

oh yeah, good call, fuel, better check that wernt the origianl fault!

 

Ill keep my fingers crossed for you it fires straight up because if it don't and it has a non tilt cab your in trouble lol just make shore you have 24v at the battery fuel in the tank and the filters are full
