Default Clutch? Fly wheel? Cam belt? :(

Good evening all,

After 7 years on bikes I finally did the deed and got my car licence and picked up an 03 plate Focus ST170. The car came with 1 owner, 82k, and full service history and is is pretty much mint inside and out. I drove it home 100miles and everything seemed nice and tight. The next two days I covered another 100miles. The car sounded perfect and drove nice and smooth through all gears...until today.

Today totally unexpected I took it out and within 500 meters knew something was wrong. The bite on the clutch felt literally right at the top (id wondered whether it was high when i picked it up though was going to get a second opinion as didnt have much to compare i to) and the car shuddered and shook going round the block in gears 1,2 and 3, the exhaust popped a few times and it sounded very 'revvy' with no power. The gf (whose been driving years) who was with me then got in and drove it the last half mile home and informed me it had no clutch.

Great.

Since getting it home i've started it up and let it idle and it sounds different....and the car shakes which it didnt do before..

I know something is terribly wrong and have the gfs mechanic step dad coming to take a look at the weekend.

My question is can anyone second guess the problem? I was told when I bought it the cambelt had been done at 74k however have made a call to the garage that did the service and have been told it wasnt and was due next service. I described the symptons and they said could be the dual mass fly wheel.

Im now wondering am I looking at all three - cam balt, fly wheel and clutch?? : (

What do you all think?

Thanks for the reply

Would that diagnosis explain the shaking at stationery in neutral?

When the DMF (duel mass flywheel) fails you will get vibrations coming from it and this would explain your symptoms of having no clutch and the shaking you describe.

Yep that's exactly what im getting. Would it be fair to say if the flywheels at fault the clutch is going to need changing too?

That combined with the fact ive found out the cam belt is yet to be done had all of a sudden made things very expensive...
