Default Can I be lazy

I want to machine polish my van but it needs clay barred first. A few people have said I can just machine polish and miss out the clay stage,is that right or am I better to clay it first

Wouldnt do it myself without baring first. Think of all the things you'll be picking up and spinning into your paint at the same time.
