Was just wondering how many Series 1's were made and if anyone knew how many on each Registration plate, i.e. B, C, & D platers!
Were 3600 left hand drive? I thought Ford built 5000 then over-ran by 3604 as demand was so high?
Surely all those 3604 weren't left handers?
Wasn't there an article in Fast Ford that said by their estimates there was only 500 left running?
How many of those are mint to concours condition - I bet 10%.
So glad I found mine - mint condition all round, 60K miles, unmolested.....

Kieron, how much did you pay for yours if you dont mind me asking mate?
When you say there was only 500 left running, I take it you ment just LHD one's, not 500 as in total left!??

I read either here, or on another forum that Ford estimated there were only 500 actually running around in total out of 8604. I guess we have to remember that the S1 went through the muppet ownership - lots written off, lots scrapped due to rust, lots stolen back in the day and now lots being broken for rare parts.
There seems to be 3-4 a week on ebay, maybe a couple in the Autotrader every week.
RSOC have a post listing registrations, they only have 147ish of B, C and D reg S1's that they can account for.....
Mine stands me at 5.6K (ouch!), but it's thoroughly mint, very minor jobs need doing and could have been left undone. Interior is totally perfect, wrong radio (but I'll address that). Carpets mint, dash mint, seats mint.
All welds are perfect, white behind wheels, kit perfect (no lumps out of it), hatchback perfect. It basically reminds me of a one year old car.
Only issues are - wrong airbox (although I have a mint new airbox now) - there was/is a K&N cone on it. Wrong exhaust - but a very nice stainless on it. Tiny amount of rust in sunroof - now treated but requires professional respray to that area. Wrong aerial - now corrected with original Ford part.
It came with every MOT, I spoke with the previous owner who was a company director, lots of service history, HPI clear (with previous HPI cert's as well as the one I did), original documents - accessory booklets, owners manuals etc etc, RS workshop guide etc etc.
I'm over the moon with it. It's the car I wanted back in '88, only it took me till now to find it!
I knew if I passed it up that the odds were against me finding another in this conditon, so I blew the money that I had taken on my mint MR2 GT Turbo for it. Makes me smile every time I open the garage door.
As my little 2 year old girl says - "I like that car......"

Sounds good mate, but One, I haven't got 5-6k to play with let alone to blow on a car, and Two, I don't mind one being std but tidy (doesn't have to be concourse or anything) just don't want something thats a fake or a shitbox!
Is that the amount you initially paid for it, or the amount you've now spent on it?
Just trying to get a ball park figure in my head for what I might have to spend!
Thanks for your help BTW

I paid 5.6K for it. I've only spent maybe another 60 quid on a few parts, bits and bobs. Obviously the above doesn't include tax and insurance, but being 34 and with the RS being the 3rd car of the house it relatively cheap.
Have you looked at the buyers guides out there?

Not all of them do.....
If you are serious about buying it then you MUST hpi it.
It's the first thing to do with anything RSish, Cosworthish etc etc.
These are high risk cars, and you need to know the history.

There's a thread on RSOC listing all of the ones that people know of which are still alive. haven't got the link here, but can add it later. Numbers at the minute are over the 100 out of around 500 left total.
I have also heard of 5000 RHD and 3600 LHD, but this could as well be 6000 RHD and 2600 LHD.
In Y2K there were 300 registered in Germany, in jan 04 a mere 71 was left....
About the numbers left, apart from all the reasons RSKieron mentions, a lot got damaged because of race and rallye programs. In Germany they had a special S1 rallye cup, so that must have cost a lot of cars.

I guess with them being raced and rally'd in Germany it's eaten them up quick.
I think they are now appreciating in value, the mint ones are going to be worth fortunes over the next 5 years.
Just look at what MK1 and MK2 RS's go for now - silly money.

In Germany you can ask the authorities for the number of cars of a certain type registered. On www.rsturbo.de an enthousiast did that for a number of years in a row. Unfortunately for you it is only in German, but maybe nice to have a look at the pics.
I would rather like know the number of registered S1 cars in Holland, but either they don't know, or one is not allowed to know.
Ford Netherlands does not even know the number s1's sold.......

Plus seems reluctant to give me the Reg No. or VIN plate ID!
Gonna keep looking now though, defo want one wthis time, I'm not gonna miss out on these wicked motors!

If he won't give the VIN number to you for hpi purposes then I'd be seriously worried!
Keep searching, see if you can up your budget slightly. If you find another you are interested in then give us some details as a lot of these cars have been owner by members here or members over at the RSOC.
Cheers!

Btw, DB: that site is excellent. Got me a load of new foreign S1 pics now. cheers fella.

Engine bay looks strange cos the battery & fuse box are on the other side..but the engine as a whole & other bits are in exactly the same place as RHD ones. weird
Some awesome looking S1's on there. Check out these I found.
Bernhard's striped one:

Guido's caged rally-style beast: cool wheels.

Dieter's striped one: not sure on these tho..different version on the originals:

Stefan's looks well tidy.

Mario's white one on azevs with blue S1

Dieter's red one (DB: His profile has 2 cars on it: is this the white one he has had painted or a different car??)

Markus's blue one (nice carpet
: check the other pics..lol ) With gauges & fuel comp from S2, as well as the bonnet vents.

Hahaha. clicked on the "Turbo Galerie" then the british flag, into the D plate folder: and he's taken all the D plate pics which i've posted onto the D plate topic on here..lol. I'll let him off seeing as I've taken loads off his site as well.
Great site. Loads of pics on there. pity my german is a bit crap & don't understand most (*read as 99.9%) of the brochures & articles on the S1.

Yes mate. think that's my favourite actually, altho the missus isn't keen on them.
They look like original manufacturer stickers from a different model of car, but not sure what. They do suit it tho...but not sure if I'd do it to mine.

RS Shawn: I think Dieter has got more than 1 car.
About Guido's caged race style beast:
I've seen this car in reality last year (EFE Landgraaf, with mine the only S1 there) and this is not only looking like a beast, it IS a beast. It is an original 1985 group A car with ±250 BHP!
Is still is 1600cc an the noise is great, all original Ford group A tuning parts.
I guess only the place in the engine bay is the same as standard, all parts such as engine, gear box, turbo, intercooler etc have been replaced at the time with tuned parts.
About the articles: in general they like the S1, but think the handling is quit a handfull and it uses too much fuel as well. Also they pity that there is no power at the bottom of the rev range, but in total more than enough power. Of course this is a 1985 opinion.
Cheers, Dimitri.
