Default Volvo T5's - V70 model

Might be going to look at an 54 plate V70, T5 geartronic (?) tomorrow.

I know a few of you on here have owned them and just wondered what to look out for apart from service history, which is full and up to date. I get the impression they like to eat front tyres and fuel? It's done just over 110k and is the SE model so spec wise, it's pretty much stacked with electrical gizmos. Price wise, there asking £3k but will take an offer.

I just bought a 53 plate S60 2.0 T SE.

From what I've read on the web, the electronics seem to be a weak point and there are lots of goodies to go wrong, but seemingly the 2004-on cars are a lot better.

It's a nice enough place to do some miles, the stereo is great, and it drives pretty well. Your T5 will be even sharper.
On mine the only faults I've found are:
the fuel gauge is dead,
the heated mirrors don't heat,
the rear exhaust hanger rots but I got a replacement clamp-on one on ebay for £15,
the NS headlight wiper doesn't like being woken,
and the load-levelling thing on the same lamp is dead - may just be a fuse but haven't looked yet.

On price, I think you can afford to make a much lower offer. I got mine for £1k and the big tax disc and fuel costs will put lots of buyers off a T5.

When I looked at these the Geartronic gearbox can be a bit dodgy IIRC

i had a 2002 v70 t5 in black

bullet proof motors, the only issue is the geatronic gearboxes.
they are heavey on suspension components and front tyres, so look out for usual knock and bangs. check for normal servicing etc and make sure the cambelt has been done

with regards to the gearboxes, check the colour of the oil. the dipstick is a short (yellow) dipstick, its located low down passenger side at front of motor. its should be a pink colour, if its brown or black it will need changing. Also smell it, if it smells burnt then it will need changing

the gear boxes are Aisin Warner, if the gearbox bangs or knocks loudly when you put it in drive, then walk away. the box should be silky smooth and change up & down with no jolt & that's in auto and semi auto. Even if the gearbox oil looks OK i would change it anyway but you MUST you the correct oil. it needs to meet JWS 3309 specification
i bought mine direct from volvo, but it aint cheap, you can buy it from Toyota or Vauxhall as they use Aisin Warner boxes or you can buy this stuff http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/..._ATF_3309.aspx
dont be tempted to use any other oil as it will damage the box

alos the auto box holds 7.2 litres when bone dry, but you wont get it all out with a simple drain. i think when i did mine i got just over 3 litres out.

i had to do 2 changes on my box as the oil was awful, and i think the oil is about £15 per litre

Thanks for all your feedback on the electrics and the gearbox.

at that oil and at the price of it!

I didn't get round to seeing it today although he dropped the price down to a firm £2600 yesterday. His selling point is the spec as it has the satnav/tv but I'd imagine that would be analogue so not much use to me.

I'd prefer a manual personally but they look a lot of car for not a lot of money. Am I right saying it should of had a cam belt change by now?

every one i have owned (4) were manual and very good on running costs. the main problem with most of them were front wishbones. if you ever have to replace one (if you buy the car) don't use genuine volvo as the cheaper copies last longer imo. at least they did in my case on 2 different cars.
