Default BMW 325tds engine into a sierra hatch... will it fit?

just starting a new project with me mate seamus to fit a bmw 325tds engine into my sierra, which used to be powered along by a far slower oil burner (1.8td).
so far engine and box are out of the sierra and the bmw has arrived ready to be stripped tomorrow, need to do some welding to the sierra first before anything else happens ( typical old ford :P ) but after the fun begins, il put some pictures up tomorrow after some more work has been done, gonna try and keep everything documented on here so i can look back in a few years and remember the "fun" we both had

essentially smudge i wanted to stick to a diesel, and other than transit engines or something poor out of a scorpio i decided i wanted something german and 6 cylinder, and a week later along came a 325tds at a price i couldnt refuse, considering it was only 100 quid more than the standard engine for my car anyway! the engine turns out is a minter, with a manual box and only 115k miles from new, and was literally 5 miles down the road from where i live, should be 180bhp roughly when done and around 240ftlb of tourque

BMW used to ONLY use blocks that had done atleast 100k for their racing engines since they thought that IF it was to develop a fault it would've by now... If it is good enough for them

right status update for the day, with pictures coming later

started off by stripping the front off the bmw, saw a thread on retro rides saying he hammered the front end off, to begin with i was a bit miffed by this, until it came to removing the bumper etc, now i completely understand, unless you have the fingers of a small child you have no hope getting to any of the important nuts and bolts ( out comes the angle grinder). just getting to a point were we could start to see the front of the engine took nearly 5 hours, this did include removing the intercooler, oil cooler, radiator and the power steering fluid cooler so wasnt the end of the world. also stripped the aircon system out, which wasnt anywhere near as hard as i thought it was going to be GOOD THING. also removed the power steering pump and the fuel filter and its housing, along with all the rubbish stupid plastic that bmw attaches to nearly everything it can. also did some more measuring and by the looks of things the engine and box should go into the sierra quite easily, its going to be snug though, and it will mean removing the front of the car just to change the alternator belt, so its getting changed before it goes in. gearbox mount aswell is only about 3cm out and its adjustable on the sierra so it should fit quite nicely. il keep you posted on further developments and il upload the pics in a bit, if you have any questions please feel free to ask

photo bucket bud. have you measured the gearbox as I'm sure the bmw's is bigger, and as for the front slam panel when you come too refit why dont you design it to bolt on so in future it can be easily removed!

Thumbs up

the sierra with engine out

the hole

the flocked dash and cossie leather thats just visible

arse end of the bmw

engine bay before work starts

bumper off, lotsa yanking and pulling and hammers involved

sorry i was wrong, just shy of 115k miles

now with air con rad removed and slam panel cut off, wasnt that much hassle with a grinder

ally comes up quite nice with a bit of a scrub

now with rad, intercooler and oil cooler off

the beginning of a huge headache (loom)

air con pump and rad removed, along with the power steering pump being loosened off the engine

any idea what this is??

fuel filter and housing removed

the wiring slowly starts to creep out of the plastic.. :/

i hope these pictures work haha

wes, nope havent measured the box yet and im fairly sure it is bigger, but should just wedge in maybe with some slight modification to the bulk head, maybe move the heater matrix slightly to accomadate it, also forgot to mention that we removed the viscous fan to allow for some more room and are going to run the twin electric fans from the sierra as they are smaller, and good idea wes, sounds like a plan, il take a picture of that when its done.

my daily is a m reg 525 tds its barrels of fun and goes sideways easily , should be even more fun in a sierra. its a long old engine though might be a squeeze to get it in
i think that block with the wires going in is an earth block does it not just bolt to the body and earth all the wires out?

yeah botters it is quite long but it should just fit between the slam panel and the bulkhead, and hopefully we can mount the bigmetal water pipe below the height of the slam so it should gain us about 2 cm extra, weve already got rid of about 4cm just by removing the viscous fan and the bottom pulley which used to run the airconditioning pump, only worry is the size of the bellhousing and if it will clear the bulkhead.

and yeah there was 2 of those funny little blocks but theyre rubber, so didnt occur to us for them to be earch blocks, il do some investigating today when we start playing with the loom

is the diesel pump cable operated?
if not, search up a 324/524 pump for ease of installation.

can ditch pretty much every thing except the starter and glowplugs/relay

the engine is out! along with about 10kgs of wires but its out, then spends the afternoon putting it in the sierra, which was successful, going to figure out mounts tomorrow and try and make a gearbox mount up, also had to cut the heater matrix so that the cylinder head and the intake manifold would fit in. im putting the pictures up online now, but i still cant work out how to link them to here so if seans about and doesnt mind helping out again? engine is now in sitting on the engine mount mounts. will have to make some new mounts up on extention plates.
