just wondering what exactly is needed to convert 2wd to 4wd as in everything... "if hubs different then do u need different shocks aswel" sort of thing. every little thing.... also isnt it said the 2wd rear diff is best out of the two? can u simply bolt 4wd box to the yb or do u need to change sump?? everything please peeps, many thanks!!

 

You will need the following:

Sapphire/Escort Cosworth (not XR4x4 as they are different) front hubs,
4x4 front struts,
Crossmember,
Engine mounts,
Engine mount arms,
Sump,
Speedo cable,
Speedo drive,
Front driveshafts,
Front diff with the strengthening brackets,
Clutch cable,
Release bearing,
Propshafts (front and rear),
Gearbox cradle,
Gear lever and cradle,
Gearbox mount,
Oil filter arm (the oil filter gets in the way of the engine mount arm on the N/S),
Brake calipers, discs and brake hoses,
Steering rack,
Steering coupling,
Gearbox,
Starter motor,
Sandwich plate,

That's all I can think of at the minute.

On the 4x4's there is a hump in the floor on the O/S due to the transfer box casing so you'd have to give the floor a bit of a bashing.

As for the rear diff, there is a very small difference in ratio between the 2wd and 4x4 (can't remember how much exactly) but I wouldn't think it would cause many problems.

Better off selling up and buying a 4x4 IMO.

imo i would keep the 4x4 diff as it will be matched with the front one .

 

no need to change the rear end at all, just leave the 2wd axle on complete
and the clutch is the same, just the release bearing thats differant(as already mentioned above)
the 2wd and 4x4 diff ratio's are very slightly differant, but they are within tolerance to be used either way around
its been done 100's if not 1000's of times with no prob so defo works with no future probs to worry about
in fact it used to be quite common to convert a 4x4 to a rwd axle as the larger 7.5 inch diff was stronger than the 7inch 4x4 diff

 

What's the difference between the release bearings?

 

Would need to modify the front chassis to clear the front driveshafts too.

some 2wd shells have it, but most dont so yes this will prob be needed to

 

My car is -25mm and I haven't even bent the flanges on the bottom of the chassis legs, never mind cut the half-moons.

 

i built a cossy 4x4 into an estate shell
left the front legs standard, that was dropped around 25mm as well
same thing as you, never touched, but any lower or harder driven may have caused an issue
so i'd advise doing it to be safe, but i didn't personaly need it either

 

2wd drive is worth more and more likely to sell just gor fun factor

 

its just i have an oppertunity to buy a cheap 2wd saff but its for a project i hav in mind so the car wont be staying in sierra guise.... but i already hav a converted rwd mk3 escort so want something 4x4 to run more power!! sounds like id be better off with buying a 4x4 but the price would be double what id be paying! cheers fellas!!

 

i agree with the 4x4 for more power but as you will maybe know its upto around 380-400 then the standard gearbox,diffs are no good and its rather costly to uprate them
