Keeping a cossie outside
Hi all newbie here!
Currently hunting for a 2wd sapph
will be be my first 1 but not my first ford, had a couple of mk1/2 escorts and currently have a mk1 Mexico tucked away for the summer!
If I get a cossie it will be left outside (pretty safe area) as I don't have a garage or car port, if I spend the extra money to get a nice clean shell will it be a rot box in a couple of years being left out in the rain snow sun etc etc??
I will only be using it on weekends as I don't drive to work so should I invest in a super duper cover for it?
Keep looking at this 1 on flee bay

Any help appreciated
Cheers
Gav.

May be looking to sell my 2wd saph. Before summer! I've kept it outside for 5 years, always used a auto pyjama, from germany, can't remember the make off hand! Cost about Ł170 been one of the best bits of kit I've ever bought! Let's the car breath! I just shake it off every couple of weeks, and turn the car over. What spec and price etc you looking for in your first cosworth??
mine has never been kept in a garage or under cover since 1991 and only has a few rust bubbles on the roof and a small patch on drivers front and rear doors, so it can't be that bad for them to be left outside, I have done a couple of small repairs to the usual places ie: foot well, prop tunnel and a small patch on the rear bumper mounting bracket and thats it, the arches are rot free and the chassis rails and the rest of the underside is spotless,
Not bad for a 25 year old ford.

take a look at mine on my profile rooge, i'll be looking sell sometime before april, as going for a 3dr or a mk2escort next
ready for summer. always been maintained at any cost at moorland classics. thats also where i brought the car from.

its stage 1, 102k, drives spot on, would say bhp is around 290bhp, puts the power down superbly, konis, a1 bodywork with only small chips to front bumper and front of bonnet, comps new 5 spokes, brembos, leather, no tat or stick ons under bonnet
serviced twice a year. only did around 900miles in it last year!!! very sorted, genuine car bud, will get the advert up im doing for it sometime tonight or tomorrow
Its the same as any other car, if its left outside it wont last as long as a car that gets garaged .Get a cover and people will want to know whats under it ,so if it was me i wouldnt . Infact i wouldnt leave it outside its just asking to get taken ,safe or not!!!!
If you are gonna keep it outside, I'd recommend a good cover, and perhaps even some kind of cover underneath the car if you are gonna keep it on a non-tarmac area. The humidity of ground might make the car rust from underneath if kept long enough there.

I park mine on the drive.I dont have a fench or wall round my house.Ive always parked it on my drive in the 7 years of owning it.
Ive got rusty arches again but thats to do with bodgey body shop repairs.

Car covers attract the damp and do more harm than good IMO. Park it somewhere away from trees and prying eyes and it will be fine. Open the sindows a bit on dry days to help keep the air circulating.
A good cover which we used at work is a cheap type you get them in gray and they are perforated cost about Ł30. We had a couple of s2000 under them for an age when it came time to work on them pulled off the cover an they were great , have used the same type of cover on my MG for six year's and now got one on the boxster.
Would say my 29 year old sierra is proof waxoyl works as there's not a spot of rust on it so the best thing I can suggest you do is wire wheel any areas with surface rust and primer and paint them and then wack waxoyl over them areas my car has been outside for 29 years never garaged except for the last 4 months don't just put waxoyl over surface rust as it won't work/help. Main areas to do are cills battery tray corners in engine bay insides of doors without blocking water drain holes etc
Good quality waxes and sealants are always going to help , tyres ,wheels plastics ect can all be treated and if kept on top of you wont have a problem. Other than the fact it is a Ford lol.
Ive got an outdoor CARCOON its been one of the best things i could have got for the car it keeps moisture dust and protects against uv , the car comes out as mint as it goes in and they also keep the battery charged up well worth every penny
Thanks
Tony
I have storage for mine now, but originally it lived on my parents driveway, but fortunately we have other vehicles, so it was always blocked in, I did have a cover as well toward the end, but as said that itself can attract attention, as it's clear something nice lies beneath!
If you can block it in that massively reduces the chances of someone doing the above as they can't get to it.
Security doesn't really come into it imo, whilst this will immobilize the car, it doesn't physically stop someone removing the car by low loader etc, which is what tends to happen especially with the advent of 'Hiabs' etc frequently being used now.
