tail lights/instrument panel

tail lights/instrument panel
hi guys
mondeo 1.8 zetec - 105k
just recently my tail lights (both) and display light have gone so i cant see my clocks/speedo at night. i cant see how theyre connected in the drawings unless the tail lights have another name. i checked the fuse box passenger side inside and one the way home they came back. now they have gone again. im no electrician so do i have a dodgy connection/relay somewhere? the fogs work ok and are what im using instead but i have to run the spots at the front too
any pointers are very much appreciated
