Default Post 1997 trailer towing. L plates?

A mate of mine has just told me that if you don't have a licence to tow. Ie after 97. You can drive one with someone in the car who has a pre 97 licence and have L plates. Like your learning from the guy in the car??
Never heard anyone being able to do that before? Truth or bull??

Your mate is correct. All based upon towing weight of the vehicle. EG if you have a land rover for example you can legally pull 3.5t behind you. plus the weight of the landy itself and your still under the legal limit of 7.5t

So a discovery with small twin axel trailer and my stripped mk3 VR6 track car. Me driving with a pre 97, licence I passed August 97. My mate passenger. Passed 95 and some L plates. And I can drive.
It's just I'm going to take my trailer test in the new year. I drive Rangerover and boat trailers all day in private yard so I'm more confident than my mate is. I have a track day at brands on Saturday.
